Greetings!

So here's the deal… for about the past week my Mac's been freezing randomly. The beach ball spins away and nothing happens. A few seconds later everything is fine.

The machine is old (2006). I recently added an extra gig of RAM (3 gigs in total).

It's normally pretty snappy and responsive. If I boot into Windows everything seems fine. I don't find any IO Disk errors and Windows is quick.

I've run the Disk Utility twice and it hasn't come up with any errors. I've tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but can't get it to run from either the Tiger or Snow Leopard disk.

My gut tells me that it's probably the HDD. It's still the original 120 gig disk. I just find it a bit strange that Windows runs fine. It is possible that the OS X partition is a bit dodgy? I don't hear the disk making any clicking noises - the noise you hear when your drive is about to fail.

Any advice/suggestions before I go and buy a new HDD?

could be networking block. try disable funky network adapters and see if it helps.

Make sure you have a good backup, I'm 99% sure it's the hard drive. If you buy a new hard drive it'll probably feel a bit faster. Luckily it's pretty easy to install hard drives in a Macbook Pro - just check ifixit for tips too. An SSD would breathe new life into it ;)

I had a look in Console and found a whole lot of disk I/O errors. I've just ordered a new disk and will collect it shortly.

A SSD would be awesome, but they're still a bit pricey for my budget.
