Hi All,

Any help would be appreciated, I recently purchased my 15" Macbook Pro Retina Laptop, Awesome machine !!

Only problem is that I accidentally dropped it, and now I'm sitting with a cracked display. No one seems to be able to assist locally, either they unable to get the parts or they crazy with what they asking for.... had 1 quote for R15K, just to replace the screen....I've look around on the web and it seems that one simply can't replace the screen itself, apparently you need to replace the entire lid.... looks like it's a single unit.

Any one that can point me in the right direction to get my baby sorted out, I would really appreciate it ! Just looking for someone that can sort it out and at the same time not want some sort of body part in return. Preferably in the JHB / Gauteng area.

Ouch! Expensive accident. They are correct in saying that the aluminum lid and the screen are fused together. There is a company called iFix - they have a store in melrose arch - that specializes in repair of apple products - they are the best and you should contact them if you haven't done so already.

Alternatively, you can import the now lid & screen and fix the laptop yourself. Take a look at www.ifixit.com for a guide on how to do the repair and for a quote on the screen. Their website says the screen is $900 so you can expect to be about R10-11k to import the screen. Unfortunately the screen is probably the most expensive part of the laptop so it's not going to be cheap.

According to iFixit the retina lcds in the rMBP are manufactured by LG Phillips strangely enough.

Talking about nasty accident's, apologies thread hijack, my brother accidentally tripped in the lounge this weekend and shot my July 2012 birthday present :( A Samsung 51" Plasma, fortunately we have accidental cover so its sorted, Back to the op what about "SPL" they might be able to source the part but you will still need someone to fit it. The handle all the major brands aka Dell, HP etc.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses, I tried the guys at IFix, apparently their supplier does not have stock, they ended up referring me to the IStore rather (They the ones that wanted the R15K for the replacement screen). It was a couple of weeks ago, so maybe their supplier now has stock, I'll go past them again and see what they have to say...I'll try SPL as well

Will keep you posted.

Just ask them to call you when they get stock - or import the screen yourself and do the installation on your own. I dont think it would be very difficult.

LOL, the MBP retina is rated as the worst possible product for self repair or DIY. Best bet is to either send it to Apple USA or buy another one with some accident insurance.

Hi,

Unfortunately it's both, it started off with just a crack on the outer panel..... I still got excited because I thought it wouldn't be as bad if it was just the outer, you could still see what was on the screen without a problem..... but it's progressed and it's getting to the stage where you can't make out whats on the screen in certain places :(

Thanks for the links... would it be possible to put a non-retina screen on a retina MBP ?

Cant you just take it back to an iStore for repair?

Here is a teardown of the retina display which shows you that Apple had no intention of ever making it repairable. The entire MacBook range will be non upgradable and pretty much non repairable if Apple continues on its current design path (and people keep supporting it by buying the products).

In case you missed it, we tore apart the new MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 last week. Inside, we found a whole mess of pretty, yet difficult to access components. In fact, the MacBook Pro with Retina display earned our lowest repairability score ever, with 1 out of 10 points.

What we didn't look at earlier, however, is the MacBook Pro's namesake: the Retina display. Apple claims that the Retina display in the MacBook Pro is the most stunning display to ever grace the lid of a notebook computer. "But at what cost?" we find ourselves asking. Being the repair-minded folks that we are, we feel that the only fair way to answer that question is to give this new display "the iFixit treatment": open it up and look! We may not be opthalmologists, but we are excited to be doing surgery on a Retina display. Join us as we investigate the intricacies of Apple's most stunning display.

He shot your TV? Sounds like he needs a basic course in firearm safety. There's this new invention called a safety catch ...

Hi Werner, won't you let me know what you find or if you ever get it fixed.
I have exactly the same problem.
Got the USB plug from my Superdrive got caught inside when I closed the display to quickly in a rush.
Bad, bad, bad, Just one of those things I suppose.
I will let you know if I find anything promising
