Macbook Pro "Vibrating & Shocking Feeling" When Charging

Ignore the voltage on the cable/plug. It's just a cable and seeing the brick only supplies about 85W it will not come anywhere near it's rated capacity.

The only important thing is the rating on the power brick which should be something like 100V-240V. Just cut the US plug off and use a standard SA 3 prong Type M plug.

If the colour coding inside is different to our local colours of yellow/green, blue & brown just post the colours here and we will tell you what corresponds to earth, neutral & live.

In the USA Black & Red, (and Blue in 3-phase systems) are live wires, and White is neutral. Green and/or Bare wires are ground, for their indoor wiring anyway.

I promise you that you won't fry anything.

Great thanks so much ponder. Will a travel adaptor work with the earthing or should I cut the plug off and attach an SA 3 prong one?

Only if it is wired for earth (can check it with a continuity tester/multimeter), else you have to cut the US 3 prong plug off and attach a SA 3 prong plug.

Okay cool I will try with the adaptor first and if that doesn't work I will cut the plug...

Has anyone ever returned anything to an iStore? I bought an SA magsafe power thing but if attaching a plug to the US one works then I don't need it. On the back of the invoice it does say they will not accept returns of opened Apple peripherals. :(

When did you get the macbook. My new macbook came with both 2 and 3 pin attachments.

I got it a couple of days ago, it's from America though so I bought a south african charger but it only came with a 2 pin cable.

I phoned 2 iStores and they told me you can't get 3 pin South African ones.

Download and install Mactracker, look for your laptop. Under notebooks you'll see macbook pro, my guess it's a MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010). Under expansion and ports you'll see the specs for the power adapter. The line voltage is 110V - 240V. So it will work in South Africa.
Go to Pick and Pay, buy a three prong standard plug, get side a cutter and screwdriver to replace the plug.
Return the extra power supply or put it in your laptop bag. It's never a bad idea two have two power supplies. As simple as that.
Laptops are designed for mobile use all over the world, people travel and work everywhere. Would it be silly to only deliver a laptop power supply thats only limited to 110V?

Just do it.

The only thing I'm worried about is not the actual power brick, but the extension cable attached to it.

I got a MBP a month ago with a three pin (bloke in the iStore was stoked to show me lol). Guess they just don't make them as spares yet?

Could be...

Anyway I bought an earthed travel adaptor for the american plug and it works fine. I returned the SA one. (They charged me 10% though :()

Call the wife and tell her to sit on the macbook. She'll love it.

Hey Pooky! You gotta MacBook Pro... you don't need a wife now!! Not that you would have any trouble finding one, what with your 17 inches.....

Enjoy it muchly ... :)

Besides I don't have a wife.

Means there is current leakage somewhere. US electrical standards were never great in all honesty.

I was referring to the idea that there was a different model for the US. The iPad adapter is 100-240v.

Something i noticed for the first time tonight and that is the iPad adapter is significantly different to the iPod adapter. The ipad one is earthed. The reason I never noticed a tingle was a) have a case for it and b) I was using the correct (earthed) cable. Two easy ways to eliminate unwanted tingling sensations ;)
