Hi Guys,

As always, when I am finding it tricky to make a tech decision, I head over to this forum.

Ok, so I am trying to decide which to get an Apple computer (Macbook) or Windows laptop.

I'm 20 years old. I do a lot of blogging. I enjoy occasional gaming but really only bother with Nintendo DS emulated games. I do a lot of digital artwork so always us Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I also love watching Anime and...yeah, think that's all I do.

Do you guys think I should get a Macbook? Or should I rather get a Windows laptop and get more out of my money? Macbook's are quite pricey and I have heard some programs don't always work. I do own an iPhone and iPad - still don't get the hype over the iPhone (sorry).

Thoughts?

:) Thanks!

Your use-case can be accomplished with either platform. You need to weigh up how much the hardware means to you and how much the operating system means to you.

The only other point I can make is that OS X has some incredible markdown tools, if you use markdown that is.

I found myself in the same position a while back and could decide between the two. I eventually settled for a Windows-based O/S and my reasons was as follow:

1. Yes, many programs are not compatible with Mac and many do not develop versions for that O/S.
2. Yes, Mac can run a dual O/S, but why would I want to run a dual O/S just to take up space.
3. Mac's are expensive, and generally so are all accessories and software for it. It will cost you a lot more!
4. You can get a better and bigger Windows-based system for the same price you will pay for a Mac.
5. I think is Mac is bought simply for the 'image' - to show off.

I think the last thing that put me off a Mac was when I visited IC and I found that they still stocked the old model of the Mac and not the new one. The salesman was sure they had the new models in stock, but when I insisted they check, they found it was the older version.

Hi Mish

You get Macbook Airs and Macbook Pros. For photoshop work, I'd avoid the Air and go Pro. However, you did mention games. Now if I make assumptions about you based on your age that are incorrect, I do apologise for the generalisation but that being said...

At 20, I know many people that age that do indulge in extensive gaming. You may just be playing DS emulations now but if that grows, you will find that for the hardcore gaming rigs people are using today your Mac is no competitor. So if gaming is going to be big in your near future, I'd say go windows. That aside, everything ICYRUS said above. Do you have any versions of Adobe at the moment? If you have for a particular platform, then go that platform. If you intend going Adobe CC or Adobe TPB then it doesn't matter. That said, I prefer design work on my Mac but both platforms are fully capable.

Hi, I agree with your points! Mainly with that fact that a lot of programs are not compatible.

Hey there! You are completely right - I will probably end up venturing into gaming and such. I do, I have the Adobe Master collection CS5 and it is for Windows. I might as well stick to Windows - it's what I know best.

Thank you for the comments :D appreciate it! :)

In that case, Windoze. Adobe CC sucks - well, the crop tool in photoshop is enough to put me off. The rest may be fine but I will put off moving past 5.5 for as long as possible unless Adobe fixes that (and a few other annoyances).

Windows (7 preferably) Cheaper, better specs, can play games.

Yes Mac is better for PS but its not justifiable to buy one just for that.

Just remember that 3D performance comes at the cost of battery life and if the main purpose of the laptop is mobile computing then you would rather not got for a graphics power house (applies to both MacBooks or Ultrabooks).

Quite amazing to find that everybody is recommending to stay in windows (which I agree as well).

I really enjoy macs and they are wonderful machines that never crash... if used properly. Macs are wonderful for Graphics and Video Applications and most Creative people usually prefer Macs to PC because they are more stable than regular PC's.

But macs are not for regular humans that use email, internet and word/excel. (I always recommend to this kind of people to stay away from mac... "sorry, you are not smart enough for a mac").

I've seen too many people crashing their beautiful macs and going for "training" at the Apple Shop and after months of constant use, they really don't know how to use them.

One of these "users" came to me and I had to remove completely MacOS and load winXP, because "the user is too stupid to use MAC".

Couple of weeks ago, another "user" with a mac... didn't know that her beautiful machine was doom to fail any minute because the HDD was 98% FULL!

If you are smart enough and organized, get for a Mac. Do not get a Mac just because they are "cool".

I think your completely wrong. A mac is the easier option for most people. If you cant figure out how to use a mac, you shouldn't be able to be in the world of computing. Things like using finder is a twaddle. Hell, even my computer illiterate mom some how "gets" the mac. Windows remains slightly alien to her.

That being said, I prefer my windows based system. Somehow, im more comfortable with it. I work in the design field (Maya and Photoshop mainly) and the amount of productivity I can do is the exact same on both systems. If I had it my way, Id get a mac pro retina and load windows 8.1 on it.

my windows machine also never crashes.

and it has a number keypad. and a delete button. and for the same spec it cost about 60% of the price of a mac.

having said that, the retina displays are awesome.

in my office, we have a 40/60 mac/windows split. i can't remember when last we had a windows software issue. all our issues (mail, printer, programs force closing, mouse batteries (can you believe you can't charge it while using it?), NTFS!!! (this is a big problem)) are with the macs. they look gorgeous, but in my mind they are totally not worth it.
