Anyone know how to do a port redirect so I can RDP to my home machine from work?

I have a Mega 200VWR and it's irritating me that I can't get it right even though I've set it up on countless other devices.

Here is a quick checklist...

1) Enable the Remote Desktop service on your home PC.

2) Ensure that the Windows Firewall on your home PC allows Port 3389 as an exception rule.

3) Find the Port Forwarding (or sometimes called Virtual Server) menu in your ADSL modem/router and add Port 3389 as a rule and ensure that it points to the correct local IP address of your home PC (e.g. 192.168.1.10)

4) Create an account at DynDNS.org and setup your ADSL modem/router to update your IP address using the builtin Dynamic DNS option.

5) From your work PC, open the Remote Desktop utility and connect to your home PC using your DynDNS hostname (e.g. juggy.dyndns.org)

Good luck :)

Thanks Inflicted, this is exactly what I have. Very strange that it still wont work.

Hey Juggy,

Another thing to remember...

Remote Desktop will not work if your Windows machine at home does not have a password set for your username.

To set a password for your username, go to Control Panel -> User Accounts

That same user account must be granted access to the Remote Desktop service. To check this, go to Control Panel -> System -> Remote tab -> Select Remote Users...

Let us know what happens... :)

Enable the Remote Desktop service on your home PC
right click propeties on My Computer or WindowsKey+Pause-Break key combo, select tab Remote and make sure taht Allow Remote desktop user to connect to machine is ticket...

and the rest what Inflicted said :)

yea u can use hamachi,, it prob more of safer route. than leaving RDP open via the port fowarding...

i personally uses hamachi for that RDP/File sharing, between my work and home..
if not then openvpn also good option. ;)

Go and download the Hamachi app from https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en

Install it on your home machine and create a workgroup in Hamachi that your home pc will become a member of. It is very easy to do and Hamachi will take you through a step by step process when you install it.

Install it on your work machine and join the workgroup you created on your home machine using the password you setup initally. Once connected you will see you home machine in the workgroup. Home machine has to be on, connected to the internet and Hamachi needs to be running of course.

Open RDP on your work machine and enter the IP address that Hamachi has assigned your home PC and you should be able to connect.

Hamachi is the best route to use, considering RDP and VNC dont encrypt traffic so everythign you send can be sniffed. When you use Hamachi at least you have encryption and it uses your standard SSL ports so you wont need to do any port forwarding.

I have done all of this laready. As I said it was working and now that I've changed from the Netgear router to the Mega and reset the rule it doesn't work.

Ah well, telkom crap I guess.

I will bugger around more this weekend, thanks for the help.
