Bought some Mackerel from PnP, I've never had it before but always keep hearing about it, so it has to be really popular.

So as I was cleaning it the could start to get the smell, it had a smell like sardines on steroids. I thought maybe after it cooked.

So as I was frying the fish it stunk up the kitchen but I've reached the point of no return. If I cooked Something I'm going to eat it.

I dished it out on my plate with some veggies and staryed to wolf it down as fast as possible.

"This doesn't taste bad at all, not good but edible"

I finished most of the food on my plate and was distracted by phone. After a while I noticed some left over veggies on my plate.

I lean over my plate and as I was about to out a fork full of veggies in my mouth that's when the smell hit me. I almost puked into my plate there and then but I some how manged to hold it down.

Stopped reading there.

No man, mackerel needs to be fresh, otherwise buy the smoked. I used to buy them off the boats at kalk bay harbour, smoked in the weber, delicious.

Ja, fish from PnP , no
I am huge lover of fish, but just wont buy fish from PnP or Checkers, ever.
Woolworths larger stores often have Mackerel Fillets, best to buy from them, or a decent Fishmonger.

Bake in a pre heated oven at 180 celcius with slivers of butter and fresh dill for 20 minutes

Next time store it in the fridge or freezer. Not between some chick's legs.

Used to fish and have caught then eaten the Mackerel, do not recall heavy smell at all, BUT fresh like that, they were really nice to eat, one of my favourite along with Tuna and Salmon.
Sadly, sounds like a bad break in the cold chain gave you a ripe one.

Would also agree, stay away from frozen fish from the big chain stores.

Anything that follows the word "holy" is stinky...

Maasbanker or Horse Mackeral fish is the one.

Very strong and fishy, oily, loaded with Omega 3, very healthy.
Best eaten really fresh, like straight from the boats onto a braai/smoked. Delicious.
Won't cook in the house.
Goes off rather quickly, does not freeze particularly well, and if frozen, must not be allowed to defrost before preparing.

Used as bait.

Won't buy from ANY supermarket chain. May buy from a specialist fish market.

I dare you to source a tin of Surströmming, and then come back and still claim your mackerel smelt strong.

Just make sure there is no one present in your neighbourhood before opening it and open it in your house with all doors and windows closed
