I created a rescue disk using Macrium Relfect 7. This was a month ago. Now, I have to recover my PC. I changed the Bios to boot off my dvd drive, inserted the disc, expecting it to do it's thing. I kept getting asked where the backup/image file is. Should I disable all other drives before trying to recover?

You would need to point it to the backed up image, which sounds like what its asking for

I see all my drives, and I have no idea where to look for the file. Where would Macrium have put it? Also what would the file's extension be?

A DVD is generally about 4GB in size.
The rescue DVD is probably used to restore the backup image, without having it on the DVD itself.

A general OS installation is larger than 10GB on it's own.

So where do I direct the dvd to look. The file is obviously somewhere on my physical hard drives. And what extensions do I look for?

The rescue disk you created just allows you to boot to Macrium.. separate to that, you would have had to use Macrium to create a backup of your PC.. if you have never done this, there is no backup of your PC to restore from the rescue disk..

I think I understand, but I want to search each of my drives for the image file, if only someone would tell me the extension.

You would set up the job and thus the location, there is no default for you

If you didn't tell it where to make this backup, there's probably NOT a backup available to use. The backup will have to be on a different drive than the one you want to fix.

Did you create a backup of your PC using Macrium at any point..? Or, were you given an option to create a backup of your PC when creating the rescue disk..? If no, to either of these questions, then there is no backup file to point the rescue disk to..

If yes, then you would have been given the option to choose the location of the image file and would know where you chose the image file to be saved to..

Access your drives through a Linux Live USB disk.

You will need a secondary pc to create the USB drive.

Move your personal data to one drive (depending on how many you have).

Boot up with Windows USB and install to empty drive.

I managed to locate most of my "lost" files, created a backup using Macrium - made a note of everything. It uses a ". mrimg" file which is stored wherever you like. For this I used a USB drive.
Lastly I created another Rescue disk, again using Macrium.
Thank you all
