Just curious : what is the normal magnification for a macro lens? 1:1?

Does someone maybe have a link to show me what a 1:1 looks like? :/

Looking a few Sigma macro lenses on SACamera ... How can a minimum focusing distance of 38cm or even 18cm be a macro lens? :/

Surely a FEW centermetres is macro photography?

Think of them as zoom lenses for macro photography... Zooming in on detail is much better than getting up close, especially when doing water drops etc.

A macro lens is 1:1 by definition. Zoom lenses with macro in their name are not.

A pic taken with a Sigma 105 macro lens on a Canon 350d (sensor size 22mm) at 1:1 (uncropped ;))
