Can a MAF sensor be taken off and cleaned or do I have to buy a new one?

I've heard it can be cleaned with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

But how do you know when it is totall messed up?

Anyone here done it or replaced theirs?

Tell me about it. Audi Cape Town quote = R4000+

ebay about R750 for a new pirate MAF and another R140 shipping, you'll have it in 2 weeks with anoher R100 for customs.

did this with my nissan maxima, but only the actual sensor on the MAF needed replacement, so $29 + shipping for me, that was 2 years ago and we're still running fine.

You can clean them BTW, sometimes it's the electronics in some MAFs that go wonky, don't know if the audi one includes the electronics in the MAF or not though. there are some risks to cleaning, make absolutley sure that whatever you use has no residue, residue will muck up the MAF for sure.

most visible symptom of a bad/dirty MAF is very poor acceleration performance and high fuel consumption (a dozen other things can cause that too though), a broken MAF will prevent you revving over 3 or 3.5k RPM

I should have a replacement MAF in stock for your Audi. Pvt me the part number that's on the housing and I'll check if I have one for you. R 800

I'd only use non residue electronics cleaning spray, and not touch the element.

Ok, I bought a torx set. The one with the little hole in the middle and Isopropyl Alcohol. Took the sensor out of the housing and dipped in the the alcohol.

Let it dry till morning so I just have to take the car for a spin and see how it works.

@syrrano. PM sent. thanx :D
