Ok I'm basically a nub mage, spammed my way to 80 in 14 days and been doing heroics for the last week or so but often when I ask to join raids they ask me what my dps is and tbh I haven't got a foggiest clue. I usually tell them I hit for about x amount and crit for x amount and I get a defeaning silence, so I think I'm missing something. How do you guys work out your dps output etc?

This is my armoury if it helps

Get "Recount" addon

Install it and run it while doing Heroics/Raids.

At the end of the raid it will tell you your average DPS for the raid or instance.

imo damage done > dps. But when ask you should have a figure like 3500 or some thing magey like that

Install Recount. Switch mode to DPS instead of Damage Done.

Go to Org, Valley of Honour, and pewpew the big target dummy for five minutes. This will give you a rough estimation of your single target dps over time. Of course, real life situation varies depending on how much aoe you're doing, buffs you're getting etc.

Total damage is better then DPS...I have no idea why people look at the DPS mostly...

I have a total output of 5.5k DPS in raids on average which isn't that great, but I'm usually within the top 5 dmg dealers.

Correct Esea ... damage done does indeed > DPS.

Any AOE class can hog the DPS stats when it comes to massive AOE'ing...

JHatman, tell when you are going to Org :D

You have 2 much hit rating (with Precision + Arcane Focus talents you need a max of 286)

google elite jerks and go check out pve mage specs / stats / general how to play.

That is a silly statement since if you aoe your DPS will be high and your damage done for that fight.

Well if you are talking peak dps then no, its not silly.

I see mages peaking on 13 000 dps on Onyxia whelps, yet when it comes to overall damage, they sucked. Once the whelps were gone, they had to resort to single target nuking again on the boss. And thats when their bungholes started falling out. Most boss fights only have short AOE burst periods, not the entire boss fight duration...

ITT, qq from butthurt hunters who can't aoe

;) jks

But seriously, mages in your guild must be pretty fail. Mages have some of the highest single target dps around these days. And ofc their aoe is delishus (esp fire mages, rofl living bomb > *)

Heheh... actually not skurm. :D

You are badly mistaken when it comes to hunter AOE.

I can easily pull aggro and die with one massive DPS figure. And I mean it... pulling aggro with insane AOE is easy.

Remove ArP gear which I am currently geared for - replace items with hasted gear items, pop my macro with all my dps increasing abilities +trinkets including rapid fire ---> volley on piled up whelps. Rapid fire directly affects Volley and since I am MM allready with improved Volley talents... well yea.

Easiest thing in the world to walk away with a 20 k dps figure... still doesnt make me a better dps class than a top mage does it ?
Allthough I will most likely be dead if my FD gets resisted.

Every boss fight is different. To get a fair idea what you can do in a raid situation, measure yourself against Patch in Naxx on 10 man and then 25 man. Its a fight where you can stand still and go for it. Then go to Grobbulous and notice the difference. Those 2 will give you a fair idea of your max dmg in extreme scenario's with raid buffs.

Naxx should also be a "safe" raid for your guild where people dont panic about your gear etc,. If they say your gear isnt good enough for Naxx, you are probably in the wrong guild :D

Other than Patch, I think just about every lvl80 raid boss requires some significant movement which is horrid for caster dps classes.

which is horrid for caster dps classes.
Exactly why Arcane beats out every other mage spec today. Fire is great if you can stand around all day shooting at stationary targets. Reality on the ground, though, is anything but.
