I'm thinking of rolling either a horde mage or warlock. I do pve mostly. Which one would be best and most enjoyable to play with? Any particular race that would be better? Thanks any advice would be appreciated :)

I'm playing a mage and having loads of fun in pve and pvp. I mostly play fire and I'm destroying on the meters most of the times :P
As for your race I guess either a troll or an orc for the dps racials they offer.
I havent leveled my lock yet so cant really tell you anything about them - sorry

Try both.

They both equally powerful, but a Mage is easier, which is why they seem to top most dps. It's not really about the class, more about the comparative gear level and skill of player.

If you have never done heroic level or raids with any caster class, start with a Mage.

I would say the next easiest ranged dps class would be hunter, then shadow priest, then warlock. That's just my opinion though. The experience is probably different for everyone. But a warlock can be the most enjoyable if you know what you are doing :)

I haven't mention other ranged dps as I haven't raided with them. Shaman, I don't like. I get them to max level then stop :)

Only in PVE (and only with arcane), in PVP you require much skill to pull off frost compared to a lock... which basically sits there going. dot dot dot dot dot dot fear dot dot dot dot fear and so on. Also hate that mages are weak against locks in pvp :(

For me, mages are easier to play in both pvp and pve, but as I said, it's probably different for everyone. Pvp is even more unpredictable, because the gear and skill level of your opposition is unknown. One moment you kill a class easily, the next you don't. :)

Arcane is absolutely horrible in PVE or anything right now, havent seen a single arcane mage in raids and none in the top rankings on world of logs.
As for PvP I tried frost and fire and both are really fun. I've stuck with fire though as you can get quite a few defensive abilities that you could not get before MoP.
And you can still use deep freeze in fire :p

Please try dot dot dot fear as a lock in PVP and come tell me how easy it is.

People just have perceptions, and those are mostly hard to change. I still remember the 1 shot mages with POM-Pyro way back that had everyone up in arms, even though that was a 3 min CD and at most happened three times in a BG.

Personally I think frost mages are the easiest dps class to play in pvp, and well geared well played warlocks are probably still the most feared class...

Windfury shams were also one hit wonders back in the day. :)

And yeah I just dont see how a frost mage can be all that tough to play...
