5 Small Crossovers for Under R200k
A growing number of buyers are looking for a little bit extra from their small hatchbacks, such as a modicum of added ground clearance and eye-catching off-roader inspired kerb appeal. If you're in the market for a new car, here’s how you can get "a lift" while sticking to a budget of R200k.
If you’re looking for a car that's slightly raised because you travel on dirt or badly maintained roads or just like the "ready-for-action-looks" of a faux-4x4 crossover then we’ve compiled a list of interesting models for you to consider. R200k doesn’t go very far, but thankfully a few manufacturers have got creative with their standard models and given them a "raise".
1. Renault Sandero Stepway Expression – R186 900
Although it's not as generously equipped with features as the top-spec Dynamique derivative, the Renault Sandero Stepway Expression is still well-worth considering if you are looking for a basic, small crossover. The Stepway Expression is powered by a 0.9-litre turbopetrol engine that offers 66 kW and 135 Nm of torque and mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Key features for this derivative include 16-inch alloy wheels, CD player, Bluetooth, USB and aux input, front electric windows, multifunction steering wheel, 2 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and electronic stability control with traction control.
If your budget can stretch to R201 900, then the Sandero Stepway Dynamique is a good buy and includes additional features such as navigation, cruise control, rear park distance control and 4 airbags. The raised ride height of the Stepway gives it 193 mm of ground clearance, more than enough to traverse a panhandle or hop a kerb.
2. Suzuki Ignis GLX – R191 900
The Suzuki Ignis offers buyers something a little different in this segment of the market. The Ignis is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that develops 61 kW and 113 Nm of torque with the front wheels driven via a 5-speed manual transmission. As we discovered during its test period with us, the Ignis offers perky performance in the city and its interior is relatively spacious for its size.
The Ignis GLX is equipped with the features such as a Radio/CD player (can upgrade to a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), rear park distance control, climate control air conditioning, LED headlights and daytime running lights, 2 airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist.
The entry-level Ignis GL is the current Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank Budget Car champion and is priced from R171 900. Ground clearance on the Ignis is 180 mm.
3. Toyota Etios Cross 1.5 Xs – R198 100
Toyota added the Cross derivative to its Etios line-up in an apparent attempt to attract more male buyers to its budget-oriented product. The Etios Cross isn’t actually raised over the standard model, but with all the extra cladding it certainly looks more capable at tackling some gravel. In fact, Toyota claims that the Etios was built with extra ground clearance already so it didn’t need an additional raise. With 155 mm ground clearance, it’s still a touch low to be a real crossover, however.
The Etios Cross is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 66 kW and 132 Nm of torque on offer. A 5-speed transmission is standard and key features include a Bluetooth radio/CD player, air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels, 2 airbags and ABS with EBD
4. Mahindra KUV100 1.2 D75 K6+ - R195 995
The Mahindra KUV100 is a purpose-built crossover-hatch and the range comprises petrol and diesel-engined models. It's surprisingly spacious inside with plenty of areas to store odds and ends. The ground clearance stands at 170 mm and its high-profile 185/65 14-inch tyres should render it quite competent at negotiating small obstacles, certainly gravel roads. The KUV100 is powered by a 1.2-litre turbodiesel engine with 57 kW and 190 Nm of torque while the petrol derivatives offer 61 kW and 115 Nm. The KUV100 comes equipped with 2 airbags and ABS with EBD.
5. Haval H1 – R169 900
With the local arrival of Chinese SUV brand, Haval, in South Africa, its parent company GWM rebadged its M4 as the Haval H1. The H1/M4 is a reasonable rendition of a crossover-hatch. It’s made more to look the part than act it, but it's reasonably equipped and, yes, good looking.
Those daytime running lights are standard, as are the roof rails and 16-inch wheels, plus a 5-year/100 000 km warranty and 2-year roadside assistance that sweetens the deal. There’s good ground clearance (183 mm) and the H1's 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 77 kW and 138 Nm and uses a 5-speed manual transmission to drive the front wheels.

Mahindra’s crossover SUV duo in SA: Stylish new XUV500 and KUV100 NXT offer more value for local SUV-seekers

Mahindra South Africa has launched its new XUV500 and KUV100 NXT locally. Both new models are being introduced with greater value coupled with, says the Indian automaker, "with attractive finance schemes".
Both models offer a very affordable entry into the range at R134 999 for the KUV100 NXT and R299 999 for the XUV500. We've included full model ranges for both SUVs later in this article.
SUV duo
The new KUV100 NXT range, which now starts with the K2+, and the flagship K8 now offers more value with the inclusion of a 7” touchscreen infotainment system. All KUV models have fresh styling and refined performance. All variants feature two airbags, ABS brakes and aircon.
With its new KUV100 NXT, Mahindra has also introduced easier ways of financing and purchasing a vehicle. Buyers can purchase a Mahindra KUV100 NXT K2+ for R2199 per month including vehicle insurance for the first year and no deposit. In addition, Mahindra, along with its finance partner WesBank, has launched a Graduate Programme on the KUV100 NXT.
The XUV500 W4 retains many of the features of the XUV-range, including the foldable seven seat arrangement, mHawk turbodiesel-engine, aircon, electric windows, at an entry-price of R299 999, with a 5-year or 150 000 km warranty and 5-year or 100 000km service plan.
Mahindra has also introduced a special finance package on this range, which offers the XUV500 W4 at R4 999 per month with a Guaranteed Future Value plan after four years of ownership.

Mahindra has updated its KUV100 budget car offering by adding a “NXT” suffix to its name, introducing a value-for-money entry-level derivative and upgrading the higher end versions (the top-of-the-range T8 in particular).
Revisions to the KUV100 NXT’s exterior execution comprise a redesigned grille, LED daytime running lights, reshaped bumpers (with trapezoidal blacked-out sections and silver skid plates), fresh fog lamp surrounds, integrated turn signals, new-shape tailgate and spoiler, plus rear combination lights.
Keenly priced entry-level version
The range now begins with a turbopetrol engined K2+ derivative, which retails R134 999 and includes driver and passenger airbags, ABS, air-con, dual-pod information display in its instrument cluster, rear child locks, a gearshift indicator, front carpets and multiple storage spaces, including cup holders and rear-seat underfloor storage. What’s more, Mahindra Finance offers a R2 199-per-month finance deal, with no deposit, 1 year’s vehicle insurance and special finance offers for graduates.
Meanwhile, Mahindra has added better finishes to the interiors of higher-specification KUV100 NXT derivatives, such as new fabric upholstery, piano black detailing and a revised climate control panel (depending on specification level). K6+ and K8 derivatives have been beefed up with a rear armrest, cooled glove box, follow-me-home lighting function, remote keyless entry, speed-sensing door locks and 12V power outlets, for example.
The most notable changes appear on updated flagship K8 derivatives, however, which feature new 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, flared wheel arches (with redesigned cladding) and re-profiled roof rails. On the inside, an enlarged 7-inch touchscreen (with Bluetooth, a USB port and audio, image and video playback) has been fitted, along with a new remote tailgate-opening switch, rear parking sensors and electrically-folding side mirrors
As before, the KUV100 NXT is available with a choice of 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbopetrol and turbodiesel engines. The mFalcon G80 turbopetrol unit produces 61 kW and 115 Nm, while its mFalcon D75 turbodiesel sibling generates 57 kW and 190 Nm. Both are matched with a 5-speed manual transmission. The K8 turbodiesel additionally comes equipped with a micro-hybrid system that switches off the engine when the vehicle is not moving and re-restarts the engine when the accelerator is pressed.
Impressive practicality
With an above average ground clearance of 170 mm (which is more akin to that of small crossovers), plus claimed approach and departure angles of just under 22 degrees, the KUV100 NXT is well suited to traversing poor road surfaces. It can seat 4 adults (or two adults and 3 children), and over and above the multitude of in-cabin storage spaces, the Mahindra’s load bay is said to be capable of accommodating 243 litres, which increases to 473 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.
In terms of safety, all derivatives are equipped with dual front airbags, plus ABS with EBD (although EBD is available only on K6+ and K8 variants, which additionally features corner braking control (CBC), speed-sensing automatic door locks, automatic hazard warnings and a security alarm).
KUV100 NXT (2018) price in South Africa
The range comes standard with a 3-year/100 000 km standard warranty, 2-year/50 000 km powertrain warranty and 3-year roadside assistance plan. K6+ and K8 derivatives additionally have 3-year/50 000 km service plans as standard. Service intervals are 10 000 km for all KUV100 NXTs.

The K8 turbodiesel additionally comes equipped with a micro-hybrid system that switches off the engine when the vehicle is not moving and re-restarts the engine when the accelerator is pressed.
Impressive practicality
With an above average ground clearance of 170 mm (which is more akin to that of small crossovers), plus claimed approach and departure angles of just under 22 degrees, the KUV100 NXT is well suited to traversing poor road surfaces. It can seat 4 adults (or two adults and 3 children), and over and above the multitude of in-cabin storage spaces, the Mahindra’s load bay is said to be capable of accommodating 243 litres, which increases to 473 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.
In terms of safety, all derivatives are equipped with dual front airbags, plus ABS with EBD (although EBD is available only on K6+ and K8 variants, which additionally features corner braking control (CBC), speed-sensing automatic door locks, automatic hazard warnings and a security alarm).

The range comes standard with a 3-year/100 000 km standard warranty, 2-year/50 000 km powertrain warranty and 3-year roadside assistance plan. K6+ and K8 derivatives additionally have 3-year/50 000 km service plans as standard. Service intervals are 10 000 km for all KUV100 NXTs.

Although the Mahindra KUV100 has been available locally for only two years, the Indian automaker has deemed a few updates necessary (including the adoption of the “Nxt” suffix). Perhaps the most significant of these is the fact the South African range has been cleverly expanded to include a new base model, the K2+, which is currently priced at just R134 999.
This entry-level variant makes do with 14-inch steel wheels and does not feature an audio system, but it does at least include dual front airbags, ABS and air conditioning. Interestingly, Mahindra SA has put together a finance package for R2 199 per month, including the first year’s insurance. This is paid off over six years with a residual and essentially pits the KUV100 against some of Renault’s Kwid packages.
So, what’s changed across the range? Well, styling updates include a new seven-slat grille, while the redesigned double-lensed taillamps are complemented by indicators incorporated into the compact side mirrors. The front airdam has been blacked out and new silver skid plates (fore and aft) lend the little Mahindra a sort of SUV pretence. The vehicle sits fairly high (ground clearance is sufficient for gravel roads at 170 mm), as befits a crossover, with good visibility.
The three-cylinder G80 petrol engine we sampled provides 62 kW and 115 N.m, although a three-pot turbodiesel is another option, producing 57 kW and a more palatable 190 N.m.
As the models progress to the K4+ and K6+ specification levels, various features are added. But we drove the top-spec K8, which sports 15-inch diamond-cut alloys, a seven-inch infotainment system (with Bluetooth), rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, front foglamps, folding side-mirrors, steering wheel controls and remote locking, among others.
Inside, the seating is comfortable with large cushions, while the gearshift is sited high up next to the wheel within easy reach of the driver’s left hand. In addition to the fairly generous seating space, the luggage compartment, while appearing very small, still houses 128 litres (by CAR magazine’s own stringent measurements).
The KUV100 Nxt is surprisingly enjoyable to drive, with a forgiving ride quality for a smallish car, but the engine does take some strain at altitude. This means foot-flat driving is often required to keep at the national speed limit, which obviously impacts the otherwise excellent fuel consumption. Indeed, the KUV100 Nxt is far more at home (and in its economy zone) zipping round town.
All models feature a three-year/100 000 km warranty, with a two-year/50 000 km extension on the powertrain. Variants from K6+ upwards feature a three-year/50 000 km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km).
While this flagship K8 model is fairly well equipped, it’s the addition to the range of the new base K2+ derivative that is most significant here. Priced competitively and crucially featuring the basic safety equipment missing on some rivals at this price-point, the KUV100 Nxt K2+ is certainly an interesting option that may well tempt budget buyers away from more mainstream brands…

Mahindra to axe 1.2-litre diesel prior to BS6 rollout
It isn’t news that carmakers in India are working hard to upgrade their current engine line-ups to conform to the upcoming, and much stricter, BS6 emission norms. However, the cost of upgrading engines to BS6 is throwing price structures out of whack, particularly so for small-capacity diesels.
Tata will pull the plug on its 1.05-litre diesel engines, VW’s 1.5-litre unit will be axed and Fiat’s ubiquitous 1.3 Multijet – which powers a whole host of Maruti's – is also set to bow out by April 1, 2020.
And now, Mahindra has hinted that the KUV100 NXT’s 1.2-litre diesel is also on its way out.
Speaking at Mahindra and Mahindra’s annual financial results announcement, Mahindra MD, Pawan Goenka, said diesels of 1.5-litre capacity and above will continue but the future for smaller diesels is under a cloud.
Mahindra’s smallest engine – the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder diesel – solely powers the KUV100 NXT, which doesn’t sell in large enough numbers to justify the investment to upgrade it to BS6-spec.
Goenka did state that in the broader scheme of things, he expects some shift to petrols even in larger vehicles and reiterated Mahindra is flexible enough to cater to petrol-heavy demand, should the market move in that direction.
Mahindra has a fairly large range of diesel engines. There’s the 1.2-litre three-cylinder, as well as a 1.5-litre three-cylinder that’s available in various states of tune, depending on whether it’s used in the Bolero or the TUV300.
A Renault-sourced 1.5-litre unit is used in the Verito, and Mahindra also has its own 1.5-litre diesel that powers the XUV300 and Marazzo; this engine was also awarded the Engine of the Year at the 2019 Autocar Awards.
Mahindra’s higher-displacement diesel engines include the 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit that powers the XUV500 and the Scorpio, and then there’s a variety of 2.5-litre diesel engines as well.

Mahindra South Africa has extended its local KUV100 Nxt range with this new #Dare variant. The newcomer slots in just above the entry-level K2+ derivative and is set to become a permanent member of the line-up.
Interestingly, the latest addition to the local range will be assembled at a new special fitment centre in Gauteng, where a team of trained technicians with four dedicated assembly lines will convert a standard KUV100 Nxt K2+ into a #Dare model.
Coming in at R155 999 (or R13 000 more than the model on which it is based), Mahindra SA says the #Dare model was conceived to appeal to the “youth and those who are young at heart”. The little Mahindra is a lesser known player in the entry-level car market, but one that is slowly gaining recognition as the rising sales figures suggest.
And now you can get a KUV 100 NXT K2+ with a little more spice, with the introduction of the #Dare special edition, which will be a permanent addition to the range. It’s currently priced at R155 999.
While the standard K2+ looks somewhat utilitarian with its uncovered steel wheels, the #Dare throws in a set of 14-inch alloy wheels finished in black, as well as ‘#Dare’ side decals on the doors and tailgate.
On the inside, the edition also gains a few features that set it apart from the K2+, including central locking, a custom embossed carpet set, rear parcel shelf and a Pioneer audio system with a smartphone dock that allows you to use your device as an infotainment control centre.
These come in addition to the features already fitted to the K2+, which include air conditioning, power steering, dual front airbags and ABS brakes.
A local creation
The KUV100 #Dare is converted from standard K2+ format at a new fitment centre in Gauteng, which features four dedicated assembly lines.

Don't forget the aftermarket Pioneer head unit, which uses your smartphone (in a retractable clip-in bracket) for infotainment, instead of the factory-fitted 7" touchscreen unit which is standard equipment in the higher specced K8 models.
