Could Mahindra’s new ‘global’ bakkie be assembled in SA?

The production version of the Mahindra Global Pik Up concept is tipped for a 2025 reveal and could potentially be assembled at a new facility right here in South Africa…

The Mahindra Pik Up is assembled for the local market at a facility in KwaZulu-Natal. However, the Indian automaker has plans to scale up to a new, larger plant towards the middle of 2025, leading to speculation that it could also assemble the production version of the Mahindra Global Pik Up concept here in South Africa.

While Mahindra has yet to announce an official reveal date for the final version of its new “global” bakkie – which, you’ll remember, was previewed by a concept unwrapped right here in Mzansi back in August 2023 – we believe the covers will come off at some point in the 2nd half of 2025.

Interestingly, that’s not long after Mahindra SA expects its new assembly facility to come online. As a reminder, AIH Logistics (which is part of the AIH Group, headed by former BMW Plant Rosslyn general manager Corrie Kotze) has served as an independent contract assembler for Mahindra SA since 2018, bolting together the current Pik Up from semi-knocked down (SKD) kits at a plant in the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in KZN.

Mahindra will again rely on the AIH Group’s assembly expertise as it enters what it describes as “the next phase of its journey” in South Africa, which involves the construction of a “brand-new assembly facility” expected to cover some 14 000 m2. This will increase Mahindra’s local assembly capacity, with the automaker saying it will “redouble” its investment in South Africa, its biggest market outside of India.

Updated Mahindra Scorpio-N revealed​

The Mahindra Scorpio-N made its global debut in 2022 as the Indian automaker’s flagship seven-seater SUV, with this model reaching our market in early 2023. Now, Mahindra has unveiled the updated current-generation Scorpio-N; introducing additional features such as upgraded tech and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The revised Scorpio-N features 10.25-inch digital instrumentation, 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment, a 540-degree surround-view camera system, and a 65 W USB-C charging port in the front compartment. A panoramic sunroof is also present. The refreshed derivative also sports 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Key features carried over from the pre-facelifted Z8L range-topper include a 12-speaker Sony sound system, six-way electrically adjustable front seats with ventilation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and Level 2 ADAS.

Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler pickup truck unveiled - Team-BHP​

Mahindra has revealed the Scorpio Lifestyler pickup truck for the Indian market. It is based on the 2023 Global Pik Up concept and shares its underpinnings with the Scorpio-N.

The Scorpio Lifestyler is a rugged-looking lifestyle pickup that features a double-cab design with a large cargo bed in the rear. It has a chunky, upright front grille, sleek LED headlights, and C-shaped LED taillights.

The pickup truck gets rugged cladding around the wheel arches and along the door sills. It also has side steps, roof rails, and dual-tone alloy wheels.

Inside, the Scorpio Lifestyler gets a sturdy-looking dashboard replete with a portrait-oriented central touchscreen, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and a digital instrument cluster. It also gets features like automatic climate control and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as terrain modes.

The Scorpio Lifestyler will go on sale in India by April 2027 at a starting price of less than Rs 19.79 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross and Toyota Hilux.
