Mahindra’s crossover SUV duo in SA: Stylish new XUV500 and KUV100 NXT offer more value for local SUV-seekers

Mahindra South Africa has launched its new XUV500 and KUV100 NXT locally. Both new models are being introduced with greater value coupled with, says the Indian automaker, "with attractive finance schemes".

Both models offer a very affordable entry into the range at R134 999 for the KUV100 NXT and R299 999 for the XUV500. We've included full model ranges for both SUVs later in this article.

SUV duo

The new KUV100 NXT range, which now starts with the K2+, and the flagship K8 now offers more value with the inclusion of a 7” touchscreen infotainment system. All KUV models have fresh styling and refined performance. All variants feature two airbags, ABS brakes and aircon.

With its new KUV100 NXT, Mahindra has also introduced easier ways of financing and purchasing a vehicle. Buyers can purchase a Mahindra KUV100 NXT K2+ for R2199 per month including vehicle insurance for the first year and no deposit. In addition, Mahindra, along with its finance partner WesBank, has launched a Graduate Programme on the KUV100 NXT.

The XUV500 W4 retains many of the features of the XUV-range, including the foldable seven seat arrangement, mHawk turbodiesel-engine, aircon, electric windows, at an entry-price of R299 999, with a 5-year or 150 000 km warranty and 5-year or 100 000km service plan.

Mahindra has also introduced a special finance package on this range, which offers the XUV500 W4 at R4 999 per month with a Guaranteed Future Value plan after four years of ownership.

Buyers can now opt for a W6 Automatic model at an entry price of R359 999, while the range-topping W8 has now been superseded by an even more luxurious W10 model with all the luxuries of the W8 and additional specification, such as a sunroof and keyless entry.

All models feature a full 3-year or 100 000km standard warranty plus 2-year or 50 000km powertrain warranty. All K6+ and K8+ models also have a 3-year or 50 000km service plan as standard. Service intervals for both the petrol and diesel models are 10 000 km, and 3-year roadside assistance.

Pricing! Updated Mahindra XUV500 touches down in SA

An updated version of the seven-seater Mahindra XUV500 (which first arrived on local shores back in 2012) has touched down in South Africa, with the five-strong range now priced from a hair below R300 000.
The latest updates to the XUV500 – which include a new grille, redesigned headlamps and tweaked daytime running lights – follow the previous refresh in 2015. The range has also changed somewhat, with Mahindra adding two new automatic models.

The brand has also added more chrome detailing to the lower edges of the doors as well as redesigned the D-pillar. Round back, you’ll find a new tailgate, fresh taillights and a larger roof-mounted rear spoiler.
The W6, W8 and W10 derivatives boast alloy wheels, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps and puddle lamps. The W6 variant is now available with an automatic transmission, while W8 and W10 models are equipped with an upgraded seven-inch full colour infotainment system (with voice commands).

The top-spec W10 adds an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a sunroof and a start/stop button, while the W8 and W10 both feature charging points in the first two rows as well as items such as a reverse camera.

Lower-spec models feature two airbags, while the W8 and W10 each offer a total of six airbags. All models have ABS with EBD, while W6 derivatives and above gain hill hold and hill descent control plus an electronic stability programme with rollover mitigation.

Under the bonnet, the brand’s mHawk 2,2 turbodiesel engine still delivers 103 kW and 330 N.m, although Mahindra says it has “refined” the powerplant. The suspension, too, has been revised to offer “greater comfort and improved handling”.

A five-year/150 000 km warranty comes standard, along with a five-year/100 000 km service plan.

DRIVEN: Mahindra XUV500 W10 AT

In the not-too-distant past, we enjoyed the use of a Mahindra XUV500 W8 AT for a full 12 months and came to appreciate it as a solid SUV with good, seven-seater carrying ability. That long-term test also revealed the XUV500 as a surprisingly proficient off-roader, notwithstanding the front-wheel drive on that particular model.

And now it’s time for a second upgrade of the XUV500 range that debuted here back in 2012. Interestingly, a lower-specced (W6) automatic derivative has been added to the line-up, while an entry-level W4 has also been introduced for just under R300 000.

The new flagship featured here is dubbed the W10. It boasts a six-speed auto transmission, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a new sunroof, a stop/start button and keyless entry. This comes in addition to the host of features found on variants lower down the range, such as tyre-pressure monitoring, a rear view camera, a voice command function, six airbags, cruise control, cornering lights and climate control.

Styling changes include the repositioning of the daytime running lights above the headlamps, rather than swooping down between lenses. Furthermore, the grille loses its “tiger claws” and gains some (presently popular) short horizontal lines.

The rear lights were always fairly fussy, but now have added elements on the tailgate that arguably improve the overall appearance. Some extra chrome elements also make an appearance. Inside, the leather seats are still a touch hard while the front passenger seat is again mounted a little too high. Still, this remains a spacious vehicle with seating for seven.

And under the bonnet? Well, while some overseas markets have switched to electronically variable turbine blades (resulting in a small boost in power and torque), Mahindra South Africa has decided to stick with the current pneumatically operated system for now. This is by no means a negative, since the powertrain already offers acceptable performance coupled with outstanding fuel economy for such a large vehicle.

Indeed, the engine remains a highlight of the package, combining a certain smoothness with economy and dollops of low-down torque. The six-speed automatic transmission comes courtesy of Aisin and is easy-going with a neat manual change option via a small shift button on the right of the gear lever. In addition, the suspension isn’t at all harsh and steering top notch, rendering the XUV a comfortable long distance cruiser.

With a warranty spanning five years or 150 000 km along with a service plan of the same time and distance, the XUV500 remains an underrated (and well priced) choice in the seven-seater segment. It’ll be interesting to see whether potential buyers take to the updated styling.

The flagship Mahindra XUV500 W10 currently (March 2019) sells for R419 999. The price includes a comprehensive 5-year/150 000 km warranty and 5-year/100 000 service plan. The XUV500 is also currently subject to a Guaranteed Future Value plan.

Verdict

If you're looking for a comfortable, well-equipped large SUV at a relatively small price, and it has to be new, then you can't really fault the Mahindra XUV500 W10. It offers a heck of a lot of car for the money, and that warranty/service plan further adds to the appeal.

We think, however, that (as is often the case with affordability-focused products) the best value can be found lower down in the model line-up. For a saving of roughly R18 000, you'd only forego the sunroof and keyless access/push-button start system if you opted for the W8 derivative. Those are sacrifices we'd happily make, and the lower price further enhances the XUV500's inherent appeal.

Ford, Mahindra to co-develop SUV for 'emerging markets


Ford and Mahindra have announced a "definitive agreement" to jointly develop a new mid-size SUV for India and other “emerging markets”.

In October 2018, the two automakers “strengthened” their strategic alliance with the signing of two new definitive agreements, after putting pen to paper on five memoranda of understanding some seven months earlier.

Now, however, the two firms have confirmed plans to co-develop a mid-size SUV using a Mahindra platform and powertrain, making the announcement in a joint statement.

The statement added the strategic alliance between the two companies was focused on "leveraging the benefits of both companies".

According to Autocar India, the new vehicle will run on the next-generation XUV500’s platform and be built alongside that vehicle at the Indian automaker’s Chakan plant.

Road Trip: Mahindra XUV500 - In search of white lions

Taking the recently face lifted Mahindra XUV500 to the glorious Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Charlotte Rogers tested whether the 4×4 really does have what it takes to find white lions at one of the wildest places in the Western Cape.

The untamed outdoors is something to behold. The sights, sounds, and smells of the unspoiled wilderness is entrancing, taking visitors back to a time before mobile phones, laptops and Netflix. Recently, I discovered such a place and located only three hours outside of Cape Town it is surprisingly easy to get to.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is, without trying to be a cliché, a wild haven in the Montagu mountains. With its 58,000 hectares of preserved, natural land complete with free roaming animals and five-star lodges, Sanbona is the ideal retreat for animal and nature lovers who do not want to travel all the way to the Kruger National Park and boasts four camp experiences – all of them suited to a different type of adventure.

REVIEW: Is the Mahindra XUV500 a viable alternative to the mighty Fortuner?

Affordable alternative

Given its size and position in the market, the XUV500 does, to some degree, compete against the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Everest. On the basis of the rivals’ entry-level automatic diesel models, the W10, is the XUV500's range topper, at R71 000 more affordable than the Everest and R87 000 cheaper than the Fortuner! Yet, it has a greater list of standard features and equally as much comfort. This W10 retails for R428 499.

Despite being down on power, the drive in the XUV500 is still pretty decent. It’s powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that’s good for 103kW and 330Nm of torque, and that power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is rated as 7.4-litres/100km and on its 70L fuel tank you should see a traveling range of about 940km.

We’re so used to wanting to have the finest; wanting to spend our money on the best names. There’s nothing wrong with it, but a greater understanding of the market will go a long way in making a sound purchasing decision. There’s a reason why the Fortuner is a best-seller in South Africa, but the XUV500 has to rate up there as one of the better value-for-money packages.
