Hi,

I know this isn't the right section, but everything focuses on broadband or broadband ISPs, so I wasn't sure where this would need to go.

Anyway, I've had my Mweb account and email address for 10+ years and recently got 3G. I therefore don't need to use Mweb as my ISP anymore - but I don't want to lose my old email as everyone has it!

I was wondering if they had a cheaper 'mail only' service that I could use to keep my address? Is there another option? Makes no sense to me to pay R1700.00 a year to keep one email address ...

You can set up email forwarding on your Mweb account, and ask them to reduce your account to an email-only account.

Or ask them to set up mail forwarding, I have no idea how much they'll charge.

I have a limited access account with them for r70 so we can use the iPass service they offer.

In the meantime get your own email address elsewhere and start moving away - set up auto forwarding to the new one with a auto reply informing the sender of the new address.

Staying with mweb just for the email address is like not moving in to a new house just because people wont have your new address.

EDIT - you can start the process right now - go get a free gmail account and start the auto reply/forwarding. :)

I'm trying to avoid gmail and other new accounts ;) Do you have any idea how many contacts you get in 10+ years? I'd be prepared to pay R70.00 just for my email useage - and not need a new one at all.

What is iPass? *curious*

iPass is an Mweb applet which will allow you to connect to your Mweb account (dial-up) from anywhere in the world.

Obviously this is a private email rather than a business one but you can still get an entire domain chock full of email accounts for less than the r70 you're willing to shell out to mweb in perpetuity.

The real shame is that it takes so little effort to set up the auto forwarding and auto reply with mweb and your contacts will quickly adopt your new address.

iPass is useful for internet access when travelling abroad. http://www.ipass.com/ Wifi, dial-up, adsl and isdn - depending where you are you're probably covered. . . at a price :o

if memory serves me correctly mweb's email service costs R35pm .. just pick up ur phone and call em lazy bum

Can anybody confirm this, I need to move my parents off mweb dail up and on to adsl. Customer services are closed today.

Cybersmart 384k line + 3gig cap : R259pm
Mweb 384k line + 3gig cap: R469pm

Both are month to month and a come with a free router and on SAIX. I don't know how people stay with mweb.

Got to love this: (mweb trying to justify the existence 1 gig accounts)
MB stands for Megabyte. 1 MB is equal to about 5 MP3 files.
lmao

1 mb is equal to 5 mps

What world do they live in. One mp3 is at least 3-4mb for decent quality!

As for the email thing, I'm really not sure. That's how they catch their clients and get them to stay with them by offering them free email accounts. It's actually quite sad as they can give you the email accounts free without a problem and it doesn't really cost them a cent, but they'll lose of a lot of clients if they were to do this!

That's why I can't stress enough that you should never use the email accounts you get with the ISP's. There are so many better options.

You can register a domain for yourself, get some cheap hosting to use as an email account or even use gmail with your registered domains. That way the emails look more legit to people as some places block free email accounts, especially hotmail.

Or you can just use normal gmail too.

There is no more reasons to get stuck with an email account from an ISP that you get your internet account from. I would strictly advise against it, especially in SA with our current adsl situation and price changes.

I somehow doubt that Mweb sell mail services seperately, but you'd have to contact them to confirm. Only other thing I can suggest is that they keep the dial from mweb and get an adsl account from somewhere else, they'll still save instead of getting an adsl account from mweb. ;)

Will give mweb a call in the morning.

Currently mweb dial up is R145pm, same as their 1gig adsl unbundled. Their prices are on the crazy side. Just shows how many South Africans take the first thing they see. (Or get locked in with cheap tricks)

My mom runs a B&B, using the mweb email address so she cant just ditch it. I use my gmail account only, not going to fall into the ISP trap.

I also heard that the mweb free router is network locked. Only works with mweb. More cheap tricks.

So I called mweb and asked how much the email only service is. I spoke a guy and he told me it was R70pm, very high. The dude was the normal call center genius so i called again to speak to a different consultant. He told me R55. lol.

So is there somebody else that currently has this service from mweb? I need to find the correct pricing.
