Mmusi Maimane was on Sunday elected the new leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

He is the youngest and the first person of colour to lead the official opposition after Helen Zille in April announced she would step down as party leader.

Some 1,183 delegates voted on Sunday morning during the 2015 DA Federal Congress in Port Elizabeth.

Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane was elected as the new head of the opposition party, at the party’s congress in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
“And the winer is, your new leader is, Mmusi Maimane” said outgoing federal leader Helen Zille to the roars and shrieks of the crowd.

Confetti fell down and stage fireworks erupted.

Zille and Maimane embraced.

Maimane is the first black leader of the opposition party that garnered 22.23 percent of the national vote in last year’s elections.
The federal leadership position was contested by Maimane, outgoing federal chair Wilmot James and two other members Adrian Naidoo and Morgan Oliphant.

Earlier, Maimane was given an award for best fundraiser.

While waiting for the announcement, the crowd had chanted ''Mmusi, Mmusi''.

Also announced at the federal congress, held over the weekend at the Boardwalk conference centre, were the appointments to the federal council, three deputy federal chairpersons and the federal chairperson result.

They were: first deputy chair Ivan Meyer, second was Refiloe Ntsekhe and third Desiree van der Walt. Federal chair was Athol Trollip

On April 12, Zille announced that she would not seek re-election as party leader at the congress, after eight years at the helm.

At the time, Zille said she would continue as Western Cape Premier until the end of her term in mid-2019.

DA is turning black......i see whites running to FF.....

No. Whites are not afraid of Blacks. If they were they would never have voted Yes in the Referendum, by a pretty large majority.

The great majority of whites want to see an end to racialism and race-based politics. Under the ANC, we don't get that.

Yah, the ANC loyalists are going to try to make him look like ****e...thing is the DA is aware of it. Lot's of challenges ahead for him.

So happy Mmusi has been elected :) He knows what he is up against. Expect lots of scratching on the ANC's part to try and discredit him.

I will never forget this from him: http://www.timeslive.co.za/politics...-a-broken-man-presiding-over-a-broken-society

He is EXACTLY what SA needs to get us on the right road again :)

I'm not a DA fan but this is excellent news.

Any chance it would mature our politics?
Probably not.

I expected that ...its my view so you can't say I am trollin....its a free country
Put you money where your mouth is.

I'll bet you R100 that the DA will have more white (and black) supporters in a year's time.

Kwaaaaaaaaa yes I know that but well the leader is black so the chain of white leaders has been cut off...so I mean the number of black voters with double because black youths trust a black party (oops meant a party led by a black guy AKA Maimane) he is one leader that can bring serious competition to ANC

Don't back down now. You implied that "whites" will flee to other parties.

I personally don't know any white person who will now run away from the DA. They all support Mmusi.

I guess there will always be a backlash from racist ANC cadres.
