An advertising revenue model for online video services has been on the cards for a long time, and Google has come up with an innovative model to monetize its YouTube service as well as share the revenue with AdSense publishers and YouTube content partners.

“Google announced the availability of video units, the first offering for content distribution on AdSense. Video units enable AdSense publishers to display relevant, targeted video content within a customized, embedded player that’s ad-supported,” the company said in an official statement.

The internet giant is working with select YouTube content partners including TV Guide Broadband, Expert Village, Mondo Media, lonelygirl15, Extreme Elements, and Ford Models to supply the video content. The video units are user-initiated and will play only after a user has clicked to play the video.
Many bloggers and website owners have been embedding YouTube videos as part of their articles, and this may now be an even more compelling proposition with the potential of earning revenue from this exercise.

“We’re excited about video units because we see this as the first step in content distribution on AdSense and a great opportunity to foster the content ecosystem on the web,” Google said.

“AdSense publishers can now enhance their sites with interesting videos, YouTube content partners benefit from a new distribution channel, advertisers have a new vehicle to distribute their messages to their target audiences, and people can tune in to interesting videos on sites they normally visit.”

The company pointed out that advertisers are charged on a cost-per-click or cost-per-impression basis. The ads will appear as a companion banner ad at the top of the video unit and as a text ad on the bottom portion of the video once the video begins playing. AdSense publishers and YouTube content partners will receive a share of the ad revenue.

Unfortunately for local content providers the ‘video units’ service are only available in the U.S. for English language websites, but over the coming months Google will expand the program to include other types of content to bring these benefits to content owners no matter their medium of choice.
