Make my Linksys WRT54G a Bridge?

Does anyone know if I can use my Linksys WRT54G to bridge a connection to my Telkom Marconi WiFi router?

I used to have a Linksys Access point that I bridged to my Linksys WRT54G so that I could get my Xbox 360 online. but I can't seem to set up the WRT54G as a bridge to the Telkom Marconi router...

Has anyone does this? Can I do this?

I'm lost :)
 
You certainly can, you would need a 3rd party firmware (I recommend dd-wrt). You need to configure what is called client bridge mode. Once configured, any systems connected to the WRT54G ports would be able to access the internet as normal through the Marconi router.

Check the dd-wrt wiki, I followed the instructions there, worked like a charm
 
That looks exactly like what I want.... Can I be a pain and ask you though exactly what do I download?

I am lost when it comes to this... and to think this used to be my main job :(
 
Okay i see I need to know exactly what version my router is before I choose which file I need...

This is going to take a little longer than I expected but it should be fine..

Feedback for the next poor sucker who tries this..

It is not easy and it is not simple. The standard dd-wrt firmware does not work on WRT54GS V5.2 routers.

We don't have enough RAM :), anyway it can be done and I have gotten it working. Rather check the following site though

You may brick your router and it will lose it's warranty.... or that's what they say anyway ;). It all seems to be working fine now though....

Oh after you have used that site above to upgrade the firmware then go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge#Example to setup your bridge.
 
Glad to hear it worked, that wiki link is the exact link I used.

Thanks for the heads up in terms of your router. I know the wrt54g v5 has an issue with 3rd party firmwares as it has far less RAM, however I didn't realise they were doing the same to the GS's
 
lol nothing is working as expected yet.

I still have not connected my Xbox to the net through this bridged router. but I am writing this post through the bridged router. I am not sure what the difference is....

Still testing though.

Well I got my Xbox to connect this morning, it seemed to be some strange DHCP problem.

My Xbox would be given a valid address and then it would get changed after about 2 minutes? Very weird. I have now put in a static address and it is happy.

The Xbox also wouldn't connect due to the firewall on the Telkom Router...
So at the moment it seems to be working, not sure it's 100% stable though... still testing.
