Make your own Canon remote release!

Hey guys :)

Ok so after buying my 550D bundle, I started playing around. Until I started taking long exposure photos, the blur killed me. Because when you press the shutter button, the camera shakes for a few secs. Using self timer also doesn't work very well, and can't be used for bulb.

So I wanted to buy a remote release, but I didn't have cash left. I decided to do some research and I made my own! Most entry level Canon's use this plug (I guess because it is so cheap to produce?)

What you need:

> A 2.5mm audio jack
> A long enough cable with 3 separate wires
> 2 normal switches (that don't click on and of to fore-come frustration).

Steps:

1) Attach the 2.5 mm plug to one end of the 3 wires (one separate wire for each part of the plug)
2) Use the following info to wire your 2 plugs:

> When the sleeve part of the plug (metal ring closest to the plastic plug) touches the first ring the camera auto-focuses
> When the Sleeve touches the tip of the plug the camera takes a photo.

3) So one plug connects the sleeve and first ring (focus) and the other plug connects the sleeve and tip (take a photo).

Hope this helps some of you guys.

I wonder if the wiring is the same for the 2.5mm jack on the Powershot G9? If it is, I can make a connector to hook up my TC-80N3. That would be sweet!

There is this thingy called py***e, remote application for Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax DSLRs. Since I have one I wanted to try if it really works. Some of you have probably taken some pictures using self timer but time left between pressing trigger and actual picture taken is not always enough. Remotes and wired triggers provided by camera manufacturers are usually expensive in comparison to their functionality and that’s where N900 comes into play. Thanks to py***e we can use infrared emitter to emulate such controller and take pictures while standing in front of camera.

Unfortunately, the TC-80N3 (as well as the RS-80N3) has a Canon proprietary jack, so I dunno where you're going to get a socket.

A dead xxD body off ebay? Heck, even a working film body with a N3 socket coudld be had for under £20.

For 20 quid you might as well buy the cable release new from from a camera store

For the G9? Cable release is one thing, but I'm aiming to use the TC-80N3. There is no Canon model like that for the G9. Even buying 3rd party, I doubt I'll get that functionality for that cheap.

I don't know what the jack socket looks like on the G9, but I doubt whether it's N3. The mini-jack audio plug only has 3 contacts whereas the N3 has 4 (3 pins plus ground).

The G9 has the same audio jack as the rebels. I'm sure the extra pin won't be a problem, I only need the shutter to work.
