Let's say I wanted to make a website but am utterly clueless RE anything above and beyond switching a computer on and off.

Let's also assume I can't pay for someone else to do it so I am forced to learn how myself.

Where might I start?

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers.

:D

Mirror thread of the one I daftly made in off-topic:

Making a website

Get a domain name.
Get a hosting account that has cpanel and fantastico.
With 2 or 3 clicks you will be able to install WordPress, Joomla, drupal, shopping cart software, bullitin boards or anything else you want.

For even relativly complex sites you no longer really need to know anything about code - the open source CMSs are dead easy to install and allow you to control everything from a simple web based control page.

Not sure what half of that means, but that's what Google is for!

I wrote a CMS package which is pretty easy to drive. Its available at www.easycmslite.com (there are also some video tutorials under the support links, so makes it easy!)...

Get hosting before the name, you will need to point the domain to nameservers. Or just use a hosting company that let's you register a name while you buy hosting.

Get the domain first - I've seen too many cases where the hosting company registers the doamin on behalf of the client but then lists thier own details as contacts. It makes it a major bitch when you want to switch domains or registrars - you are practically held hostage.

You can register the domain and then simply park it or redirect it until you have a hosting account in place.

BTW - don't get caught on price either. A .co.za domain is only R50 per year (go to www.co.za) and a international domain (.com, .net etc) is around $7 - $10 per year.

@copacetic - PM me with your contact details and I'll talk you through it.

You can get hosting from hetzner.co.za or webonline.co.za. Both companies are great for hosting. And do yourself a favour...DON'T get hosting from Mweb or Webafrica. We have clients that host with them and it's always a pain when dealing with their servers.

EDIT: If you just want a blog, download Wordpress and copy the files onto the hosting server using a program like Filezilla.

First check out the site w3scools.com. Work through the html and css exercises. That should help. Then start worrying about your domain etc.

not a big fan of these rapid development suites but hey whatever is the easiest i suppose.

Yup. The big CMS "suites" out there are exactly what most people need - and those that need custom sites are usually willing to pay us to do it. :)
