My laptop is plugged into an ethernet modem making it a lot less mobile -- I like to work in different rooms and end up carrying the modem and long cords around with me. Is there an easy and relatively cheap way to make this connection wireless? I've looked at the wireless routers at the incredible connection site but they seem to be geared for bigger office setups. I'm looking for something fairly basic - for a small apartment, one laptop. Also, are there security issues I need to be concerned about?
Thanks!

Should be easy enough and cost no more than R1000
Something like :-

Wireless Lan Router :-

And a PCMCIA Wireless LAN card :-

Of course, you can go slightly more expensive and opt for a 54mbs solution.

Here's the sybaritic networking page :-

As far as security goes, a wireless LAN Router like the one linked doesn't have a very strong signal, maximum 300M outdoor, 100M indoor, so your neighbours, if they knew what they were doing, could try to hook into your network and a war driver could hook into it from the street outside your house.

Most decent wireless LAN routers will have WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) built into the firmware, which offers a decent level of security.

That will keep out all but the most determined - and those that are really determined would most likely need physical access to your equipment before being able to gain access to your network remotely.

I Have a Wireless ADSL config at home/office :

54/125MB Wireless Access Point
54/125MB PC Card

----

This is the most used way to get your apartment wireless. Connect the modem to the access point via cross-over cable supplied with access point.

Linksys has a Router / ADSL / Wireless - WAG54G. Works very well. www.linksys.com. If your Notebook has a centrino chipset no problem other wise get a PCMCIA card. Total cost about R1500. Phone Westcon / Comstor to find reseller

I bought a Netgear DG834G which has wireless builtin for about R1500.
Might be a bit much, but it does the dialup from the router, so no need for PPPoE software and to make new connection every time. (I connected once when I got it andsd haven't had to disconnect since)

Most wireless devices support WEP which is the wireless encryption protocol thingy.
You create a key on the router and you have to enter that key in your settings on your laptop for the wireless connection to work, so even if people out on the street can "see" that you are using wireless, they can't use it because they don't have the key.

I just bought the Gigabyte GN-49B, to do exactly what you're planning. It works really really well. I definitely can recommend this unit.
