I just got the new makro catalogue and they have Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L laptop for R5500. All I need it for is for university stuff,
I'm not really experienced with laptop specs so if you can help it would be great:

Intel celeron M 1.7GHz
512MB RAM
60GB HD
15.4" screen
Wireless LAn
Dual Layer DVD writer
Microsoft Home
But it does not come with express card slots.

Thats all the specs I have for now

So is it any good or is it crap?

Much thanks
DB

Hi there DB ;) those specs and the price seem good, laptops are a tough game, one month you'll get better specs and prices, the next month it's more expensive, I'd say if you have the cash, buy it, remember you won't be able to play any games etc. All around it's a good buy :)

My wife purchased the Amilo (http://www.makro.co.za/ProductDetail.aspx?cat=6367&prod=31257&SKU=000000000000096366|EA) which is a tad more powerfull, she's VERY happy. Surprisingly, it can handle guildwars with all the settings on high. We checked online b4 we got it and they said we might be able to play with settings on low.

Only thing is you must get the latest GFX drivers off the net.

Other than that , ************* stars for the range...

Those screens are very glossy. I had a peek today. The specs are reasonable but not the same quality as ACER.

I don't see how you can regard Acer as quality. Since the days of the 286 all I have ever had from Acer is trouble.

I have known nothing but good quality laptops from Acer, have not had any problems yet.

Just remember that the Fujitsu Siemens warranty is backed by ICSS. They can often take up to 3 to 6 weeks to get stock of parts when the laptop fails. My motherboard, DVD drive, screen and hard drive have all failed at different intervals during the first 18 months and were all replaced under the standard warranty or extended warranty. Make sure you get an extended warranty (1 + 2) as I would hate to think of what the costs would have been. Down time is also a major inconvenience. If uptime is important to you then avoid a laptop unless it is imperative for you to be mobile. I believe Fujitsu Siemens also use a service called "Let me Repair it" or something. If you bitch enough then they eventually tell you about this option. They are based in George or somewhere and supposedly carry stock of all parts. They supposedly guarantee a turn around time of five days and cover shipping there and back. Make sure you keep your original packaging to easily courier it because Fujitsu Siemens give lots of trouble. If you can get HP then rather go HP as they tend to be more reliable and (although also serviced by ICSS) they have a better agreement with ICSS for quicker parts availability.

You can also check some more cheap laptops here. I'd rather try find a laptop with a Sempron CPU as it will be better (and usually means it has an ATI graphics chipset like a X200M or so)

I also bought my laptop at Makro, but for R7000, because it had better specs. I'm very happy, and really dont see why I must pay over R10 000 for HP or the other leading brands.

Dannyboy, drop me a PM. I can get you a dual core laptop for around R6500. It's a grand more, but it's not celeron - it's faster, better and has a bigger hard drive.

Say what? I'm not really in touch with laptop prices at the mo but R6.5K for dual core?

Try and get a newer chip like a Core Duo or even a solo if you're poor. The Celeron M is getting old now.

I do believe that laptops get a Duo where as desktops are Core 2. Both dual core CPU's but the laptop Duo is based on two Pentium M's on one core. These are very fast:D but mine will not get close to my lap. Worried that the fat inside my legs will melt and my (b)alls will fry!

I have contacts and am feeling really nice at the moment. Computer industry makes high margins once the laptop has worked it's way through the supply chain. Some of the laptops are not BRAND spanking new, but are brand new condition - and i have very VERY limited supply at the moment. It's basically luck of the draw...

IMHO Fijitsu Siemens is CRAP!!! Stay away, 4 laptops later I still have problems. HP is well worth the extra bucks
