MakuluLinux.

the whole mobile/social sync feature is something that needs time to implement, I have a new release scheduled in June, So i will concentrate to get some descent sync system into that release, i dont want to rush the idea, id rather take my time to research properly so that when i implement it, it will work and add to the charm of the project. I have done some reading and have plenty ideas already, so its a start :)

For now just know it is in progress and something to look forward to on the next major release ...

Thanks for giving it consideration - the sync, that is. Rome wasn't built in a day, either, so just do what you can without burning yourself out in the process. :)

Well Ive finished compiling the final Build of Version 1.0, it should be uploaded by tomorrow sometime.

Changes :

  • Completely re-branded, remove everything Mint and Ubuntu related, including their customized packages, only Mint and Ubuntu related stuff left is packages/repositories related to installed software that need updating. Everything, including the installer should now display Makulu as it was always intended to do so. So yay for that ...
  • Fixed the nasty login bug that affects some computers
  • Display Manager is no longer using LightDM but MDM instead with a nice sleek black theme with plenty options including ability to add photo to user in login panel.
  • Added Ubuntu One to the distribution, since alot of linux users make use of the free storage space and can now easily sync their computer to Ubuntu One on Makulu. incidentally You can sync your phone with ubuntu one as well, so its a nice way to sync phone with PC using ubuntu one as the middle man. You get 5GB free storage.
  • Added some speedials to Opera and also added a "sync to android phone" extension, which basically sends the webpage you are viewing straight to your android phone.
  • Some software updated to fix minor issues
  • Various tweaks all round the operating system
  • Cleaned up grub and just made it much neater in general, options are now clearer and nicer looking.
  • ISO size has been reduced by 10MB ... hehe, not sure that was worth mentioning :)

Currently busy uploading ISO, but net is slow in SA ... So im guessing it will be done tomorrow sometime, i will make post here when it is done.

It sounds promising. Also, that opera-android sync is cool. I also use Opera Link. Nifty.

As someone who often changes his desktops I like this idea. As someone who loves gnome3.... where is that? :D Lots of people are going to love the choice of multiple desktops.

Also, Opera browser (in its current form) is going to be discontinued and is certainly not the sleekest and fastest browser. For that there is Chrome. Which is why the guys at Lubuntu went Chrome for the browser.

Nothing stops a user from installing chrome or firefox or any other browser. I myself have just had to many problems with both in the past, each version they seem to get slower and more bloated, not to mention that you have to install a ton of extensions to have them functional which just ads to the resources, I like opera as i am sure many do, but everyone has their own preference, so if you like chrome, install it ( just takes a few clicks to do that ) :)

As for Gnome3, maybe in a future release we will add it, if that is what the users want, for now cinnamon is based on Gnome3 and it just made sense to go with cinnamon instead. We may even include a few extra desktops in the next release, who knows. for now the 4 most popular desktop environments have been added, and for a first release i hope it lives up to any hype thats been created.

Feel free to post any feedback, everyone keeps saying good job and all that stuff, but im still waiting for any actual feedback based on usage, already in 2 and half days i see we have just over 300 downloads, and im sure that will just keep picking up, so feedback please would be appreciated :)

Very nice idea and very well done.

I will be downloading a copy and trying it out in the coming weeks. I will only comment then on the distro as it would be unfair to comment on a product I have yet to try.

Good luck. Doesnt meet my needs but then neither does Mint. Since Mint is popular I know there are people who will really like your version.

Just remember, Opera as an independent browser is over. Theyre going to be using the same framework as Firefox and all the other Mozilla clones. Such a pity :( I actually love using Opera as an IMAP email client :/

The major changes in Opera will not happen very soon, they will implement changes on mobile browser before touching Pc browser and that will only be near year end, and just because they are moving to webkit it doesnt mean its a bad thing, right now no one knows whats going on behind the curtains. They have always been the best browser in my eyes, not just because of speed, but because its highly configurable and to be blunt their speedial feature just kills other browsers ( yes you can add it to chrome and firefox via extensions, but it still not the same thing and surges the resource usage ) and until that changes i will continue to support them.

Analyst are always highly critical and always fearing the worst, Opera has recently purchased Skyfire as well, and from what ive read Opera team are already implementing patches from Presto into Webkit, so in the long run Chrome browser will also improve, so there is probly alot going on that no one knows about, im sure the Opera team know what they are doing.

And as i stated, currently it is the best web browser, Ive tried them all, I live online, and Opera just feels smoother, looks better, runs faster most of the time, uses less resources, less bandwidth, has most common features built in without the need for additional extensions and is highly configurable. So while it holds this standard it deserves its place in the Distro :)

I will be posting a youtube review of Makulu in the next day or so, I will put some focus on Opera and some useful features in the review, so you might want to watch that.

O and btw, i see we have now reached the 700 downloads mark on the final build i posted just under 2 days ago, so yay for that.

Does anyone have this file mirrored or available as a torrent. I can't get the ISO file off their server, as Google says too many people have downloaded it. I'd like to try it out. If I like, I may look at hosting a mirror as well.

Good luck with the project, I use Peppermint Linux. If I get a chance to test Makululinux I will and report back.

If I was you, I would contact http://fullcirclemagazine.org/ and other Linux publications. The more publicity you can get the better.

Ive added more mirror links. Torrents are a problem, My connection is FAR to slow to seed anything and i havnt to found someone that can seed yet, if you want to make a torrent then feel free to do so, just send me the link and ill add it to the downloads section :)

I have servers with unlimited bandwidth in Germany if you need another mirror.

very kind of you :)

if you can create a torrent and seed it and just send me the torrent link i can add it to the site and obviously give you credit for hosting ... if not a torrent even a direct http link would be extremely helpful and very much appreciated.
