Here's an updated advisory from the South African Society of Travel Medicine.

You'll note recommendation is for prophylaxis during summer/warmer months.

In the Kruger during winter?

Must've been a very long foot tour. Incubation period is at least a week.

Good choice, if its going to make you feel more comfortable, go for it.
However all the info you need to make your choice is available on Google. Taking advice from a paramedic is ridiculous. Lot of Rambo's make up stories of how they involved in rescues etc.
1.4mil people visit the Kruger every year, I am sure if people die regularly from getting malaria there we would read in the news about it. And now I am talking all year, not even winter.

You can still get malaria even if you take the pill. Do not know how true it is but heard it is more difficult to detect malaria if you took the pills.
If you want to feel safer(not 100% safe) take the pills. But if you don't there is very little chance of getting Malaria and even if you get it, its not a death sentence, doctors and medicine is good, as long as you immediately go to the doctor the first few weeks after you been there and feel sick and tell them you might be at risk.

Even in areas with high cases of malaria locals don’t take meds. You sleep under nets and spray loads of peaceful sleep.
You can’t live on malaria meds, iirc they harden your arteries.
Personally, malaria meds make me feel like absolute crap and I’ll avoid them if possible.
