Malawi president leads election with most votes counted

Blantyre - Malawi's incumbent President Peter Mutharika was in the lead after 75% of the votes were counted in this week's election.

Official results showed Mutharika had captured 40% of the ballots cast in the southern African nation, putting him on track for a second term.

Mutharika's main challenger, former Christian pastor Lazarus Chakwera of the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), followed with 35% of the vote, the electoral commission said.

The incumbent's estranged deputy, Saulos Chilima, meanwhile received 18% in Tuesday's polls.

Mutharika, who runs the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has promised a leaner cabinet and better infrastructure, but his first term in office saw failures in curbing corruption.

Malawi's 6.8 million also elected a new parliament and local government councillors in the poverty-stricken former British colony.

About 70% of Malawi's population of roughly 20 million people live under USD$2, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The nation is also still reeling from Cyclone Idai, which caused dozens of deaths and devastation in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe in March

Nobody really cares!
Still the same sh!thole as when the Yao chiefs, in mid – late 1800s, were raiding other tribes for stock to sell to the slave caravans for shipment to Zanzibar and onward to Arabia.
A century later, Hastings Banda never bothered about selling his serfs; if they annoyed him he simply had them thrown to the crocodiles in the Shire River at the southern end of Lake Malawi.

This is despite 92% votes counted so far.

Addressing the news conference, MEC chairperson urged the nation to remain calm until Friday, 12pm for more updates.

During the briefing the media were not allowed not to ask questions.

They listened to all the comments on the internet about GOT season 8. And decided, "don't be like D&D" . Results are actually expected late next year

Observers Note Problems in Malawi Elections

BLANTYRE, MALAWI —

Foreign observers of Malawi's presidential, parliamentary and local elections issued a preliminary assessment Thursday, saying that although the process was peaceful, it lacked a level playing field.

Incumbent leader Peter Mutharika held a small lead in the presidential election, partial results showed. About a quarter of the votes remained to be counted, leaving challenger Lazarus Chakwera some room for hope.

The European Union observer mission said the Malawi Electoral Commission organized the elections well, but the pre-election period was marked with tension.

"What we see as a problem," said Miroslav Poche, the EU mission's chief observer, "is the abuse of state resources and also bias by state media."
Drama queen. This is an African election. Those are part of the rules. We're not as bad as the Europeans, who even cart the disabled and elderly to the ballot stations. No respect for the elders. And who pays for it? The state

The EU mission also bemoaned attacks on opposition politicians ahead of the voting.

The leader of the Commonwealth observer team, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, said the election was well-managed but that it was premature to declare it fair.

"We are not making any judgments — that's a matter that will arise later," he said. "When everything has been done, then it will become possible for the observer team to say, 'Now, given everything we have heard and seen, it is possible to say these elections were fair,' and whatever."

Now, now Mbeki. I know whisky is cheap in Malawi. But you were there to observe the vote, and whatever

All the two former first ladies Callista Mutharika and Patricia Shanil Dzimbiri who were contesting in the May 21 Tripartite Elections on newly-formed UTM Party, have failed to to win in the parliamentary race.

Callista Mutharika: Fails to win seat Shanil and Kalindo: No laughing mattter we have both lost

Callista, a widow of late president Bingu wa Mutharika, was contesting in Lilongwe and was unsuccessful.

While Shanil, formely wife of former president Bakili Muluzi, who was Balaka West legislator has been purged from the august House.

Shanil has served as member of Parliament (MP) for the area since 2014. She first won as an independent.

The two former first ladies are key leaders in UTm which is led by outgoing State Vice President Saulos Chilima.

Other UTM top brass members have also suffered similar fates.

UTM presidential running mate Michael Usi and the party's Secretary General Patricia Kaliati lost their parliamentary bids. Kaliati lost her Mulanje West seat she held since 1999 while Usi failed to make it in his debut in Mulanje Central.

Lol.

It's Kaliati. She will jump beds again and be minister of something again. Did I say beds? I meant parties

Malawi to probe contested results, Mutharika's VP loses parliamentary bid

Abdur Rahman Alfa Shaban

Malawi’s election body on Thursday night said it had received over 95% of presidential results but had still officially announced close to 76% of the tallies so far.

With the results declared so far, incumbent Peter Mutharika was in the lead with over 40% of valid votes cast against the main opposition Malawi Congress Party’s Lazarus Chakwera with 35%. Mutharika’s vice Saulos Chilima is in a distant third with 18%

Speaking at the final press conference for the day, Malawi Elections Commission chairperson Jane Ansah disclosed that her outfit had dismissed one petition and quarantined results from another area to allow for probe. The body said the next round of results will be released midday on Friday.

This is huge!! The VP didn't win his own seat.

But, it's most likely Peter again. That 5% difference will be difficult to close with only 24% of the vote remaining

Malawi has a winner takes all system. So if ten candidates are competing, and it ends up with 1 of them on 9.9%, 8 of them on 10% , and one of them on 10.1%.....the 1 with 10.1% will be declared president

They both stole that from game of thrones, seeing how the world of game of thrones was here many millennia before the current continents even formed.

On a more serious note
But the heavy use of Tipp-Ex on some result sheets exposed in the media may be a tell-tale sign of a lack of respect for electoral niceties.

Donors give almost as much money annually (US$1.1-billion) as the budget (US$1.5-billion). Yet the impact of donor spending is diffused, in part because they’re not tough enough on governance failings and in part because of a focus on a large number of projects.
Malawians survive today on an average per capita income of just US$420, just twice that at independence in 1964. It was then among the five poorest countries worldwide. It is now the sixth-poorest.

That's not much in a country of 19 million people (even including the donor billion dollars).

Malawi has become a kleptocracy of sorts. For a while now. Everyone knows what's happening, but noone cares that everyone knows

Side note: it's a bit disingenuous for the Sri Lankans to copy their flag from our coat of arms

That coat of arms looks like it's copied straight from modern European heraldry and I'll narrow it down further to the royal arms of England. Talk about cultural appropriation...

PS. That's a Lion "passant guardant"

Without being nasty, I don't think anyone really cares. This view isn't bourne from a dark place, but we all know that if one corrupt cadre wins or another, it's all the same.
