FOURTH SHIP TO JOIN SEARCH FOR MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT 370

A fourth ship with specialized underwater equipment will join the search for a Malaysia Airlines jet 10 months after it vanished off Australia's west coast.

Acting Australian Prime Minister Warren Truss says the ship Fugro Supporter is on its way to the search area after conducting trials off the Indonesian island of Bali.

Truss, filling in while Prime Minister Tony Abbott is on personal leave, said Monday the ship is equipped with an autonomous underwater vehicle that will be used to scan portions of the search area that cannot be searched effectively by the equipment on other vessels.

Not a single trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been found since the Boeing 777 vanished with 239 people aboard last March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

MALAYSIA AIR SITE HACKED BY GROUP CLAIMING SUPPORT FOR IS
By KELVIN CHAN

Malaysia Airlines officials were struggling Monday to restore the embattled carrier's website after it was hacked by a group proclaiming support for the Islamic State group.

The airline's site was changed, at first displaying a message saying "404 - Plane Not Found" and that it was "Hacked by Cyber Caliphate," with a photo of one of the airline's Airbus A380 superjumbo jets. The browser tab for the website said "ISIS will prevail."

Malaysian Airlines is trying to recover from twin disasters last year, including the disappearance of Flight 370, which authorities believed crashed 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) off Australia's west coast, and the downing of Flight 17 over Ukraine.

The website was later changed to include a picture of a lizard in a top hat, monocle and tuxedo smoking a pipe. The Islamic State reference was removed and the claim of responsibility changed to "Lizard Squad -Official Cyber Caliphate," with a link to the group's Twitter account.

The airline said in a statement that it was a "temporary glitch" that didn't affect passenger bookings and that the breach had been reported to Malaysia's transport ministry and Internet security agency. It said user data "remains secured."

The group, however, tweeted that it was "going to dump some loot found on malaysiaairlines.com servers soon," and posted a link to a screenshot of what appeared to be a passenger's flight booking from the airline's internal email system.

The Lizard Squad group last year claimed it was behind attacks on Sony's online PlayStation network and Microsoft's Xbox site.

In August, it also tweeted to American Airlines that there might be explosives on a plane carrying the president of Sony Online Entertainment, which makes video games, forcing the flight to be diverted.

Malaysia Airlines also said in its statement that its domain name system was "compromised" and users were being redirected to the hacker group's website.

The domain name system translates web addresses typed into browsers into the numbers that computers use to identify and connect with each other on the Internet. It said it will take up to 22 hours to restore the website.

The militant Islamic State group now holds about a third of both Syria and Iraq, territory it has declared a caliphate. Police in Malaysia detained 43 people last year on suspicion of links to the extremist group, underscoring concerns held by Prime Minister Najib Razak that the spread of Islamic State ideology could lead to conflict in predominantly Muslim Malaysia.

CHINESE MH370 RELATIVES REJECT WORD THAT PASSENGERS ARE DEAD

About 100 Chinese families of passengers on the missing Malaysian airliner demanded Friday that Malaysian officials retract their statement that all aboard died, saying that without hard evidence they don't want to start compensation claims.

Malaysia's government formally declared still-missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 an accident on Thursday and said all those 239 people on board were presumed dead, paving the way for claims to begin. Most of the victims' families in China - where the majority of the passengers were from - still hold onto hope that their loved ones are alive.

"We don't accept it. As a matter of fact, we are demanding the statement to be retracted," Zhang Qian, whose husband was on the plane, said on Friday.

The relatives' continued refusal to accept the authorities' conclusion is understandable because they are going through "ambiguous loss," where there has been no body or wreckage to confirm death, said Therese Rando, a clinical psychologist in Warwick, Rhodes Island, who has worked extensively in grief counseling.

"For any family member to make the move to presume death in the absence of confirmation is a huge step," Rando explained in an email. "They need to have eliminated other possibilities; to do otherwise would be tantamount to prematurely abandoning their loved one."

Earlier this week, in anticipation of the Malaysian statement, 110 members in a group of 115 relatives of passengers voted during a mobile phone group chat to demand that Malaysia refrain from making any announcement.

Jiang Hui, whose mother was a passenger aboard the flight, said the new announcement was based on no new facts.

"We not only demand the Malaysian government retract the statement, but also issue an apology," Jiang said. "That's the wish of the majority of family members."

Relatives were unmoved by the argument that the declaration paves the way for compensation claims.

"I feel like I am giving it all up if we start talking about compensation," Zhang said. "We don't need compensation, and we would be more than glad not to ask for a dime if my husband comes back to me."

Malaysia's civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said Thursday that the search for the jet "remains a priority." The Boeing 777 disappeared on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
