'Political comedian' Malema criticised by comrades
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA Oct 10 2008 17:30
The Chris Hani branch of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Western Cape on Friday sharply criticised "unruly" league president Julius Malema.

In a statement signed by branch secretary Vuyisile Schoeman, the ANCYL branch expressed regrets for having supported Malema in his campaign to lead the league.

The branch also welcomed the call by former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota for a national convention.

The statement added: "The truth is the ANC is in deep crisis mainly due to his [Malema's] loose comments about senior members of the congress movement, as well as other respected members of the society."

The branch met on Friday and concluded that Malema posed "a real danger to the future of young people of this country".

The branch described him as "a political comedian and a despot in the making".

"As members of the ANCYL in the Western Cape and as young people of South Africa, we definitely want to dissociate ourselves from the arrogant utterances of Julius Malema," Schoeman said. -- Sapa

I don't know how many members this branch has, but it's an interesting turn of events.

It is always refreshing to see some people with common sense and level-headed thinking step forward and state their minds.

Problem is that people will believe this cr@p and then go and vote for them again and then when the k@k hits the fan, people wonder why. I just dont get how stupid people can be. Dont forget the last 14yrs of utter cr@p we have been dished out.

Its odd, but I didn't realise they existed. Possibly been kept hidden for 14 years :/

How can anyone listen to what these idiots have to say? This is all just for getting votes, wake up guys

Ridiculous marine1, to suggest that this distancing is calculated and orchestrated. Really, I wouldn't give the ANCYL (even sans Malema) that much credit.

Neither do I give credence to the view that Lekota is a matyr for the ultimate aim of mantaining and/or increasing the ANC vote in the next election, as rwenzori has suggested in another thread.

Do you honestly think these divisions we see in the ANC are not real and are just for show?

I do think they are real as indicated in one of the other threads. It is mainly about money IMO. The old guys have had their free money cut off and are not upset about it this and the fact this I believe this is still an issue about Xhosa and Zulu. Problem is why should I vote either way? The old regime (TBONE) and crew screwed this country up almost beyond repair. Just look at the essential services, BEE, AA etc. The new crew are the likes of Yengenie, Malema, Zuma etc. No better.

To clarify - that is NOT what I said or implied. I said that the threat of causing a split was a means for the splitters to regain some bargaining power within the ANC in their usual quest for political reward.

But the split idea seems to be gathering momentum and maybe Terror and co will be carried away by it. Interesting.

Speaking to black people, it seems many of them think Malema is disrespectful and don't like him or his antics. He is roundly criticized on black talk radio, I am told.
The amount of coverage he gets is symptomatic of the sensationalistic media these days. He is the Britney Spears of South Africa. They are waiting for him to get out of his BMW without his underpants on. Not literally, of course.

At least the dude provides entertainment. One can't say the same for the people sleeping during parliament.

Any kind of publicity is good publicity...or not.
