Malware - Removal and Protection

My brothers system has Malware on it. Can someone recomed a free software application that would scan and remove it?

I also recomended that he installs Avast to protect him in the fututre - will that do it?

Depending on the level of infection, i find u save more time reformatting and re-installing. I never trust a system once it has been infected .

Better yet if you keep an image of your clean system it makes recovering very easy and quick too.
