Grenade attack: children found hiding

Durban - Two children hiding in a bedroom escaped unhurt when their mother was hit by a grenade in their Amanzimtoti home on Sunday.

A man, thought to be the woman’s husband, threw two hand grenades at her in an argument.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the suspect allegedly threw the grenades at the 33-year-old victim and one exploded, injuring her.

“The police explosives unit found both hand grenades (including the shrapnel of one) in the house.

Emanzimtoti police are looking for a 30-year-old man who can assist the police in the murder case,” he said.

The children were reportedly traumatised by the incident in Karridale Road.

MEC to grenade killer: Hand yourself in

Durban - It was “senseless, inhumane and diabolical” and police should do everything possible to arrest the man who allegedly threw two hand grenades at a woman, said KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu.

Mchunu was speaking on Monday about the grenade attack in a home in eManzimtoti.

“It is extremely painful to wake up to the terrible news that a woman has been killed in a nefarious manner. We also appeal to the suspect to hand himself over,” he said. “Anyone who might have any information that might lead to his arrest must come forward.”

The woman has been identified as Lesego Mohoasa, 33, an air force clerk for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) at the Bluff Military Base. Initially police gave her age as 30 and the man who attacked her as 33.

It has now emerged the suspect wanted for questioning is 44 years old, and an ex-MK veteran who had served in the SANDF.

I can understand why someone would want to throw a grenade at their wife but the concerning part is where did he get a hold of a grenade?

Grenade accused has gammy arm

Durban - The State’s sole witness to a man blowing up his wife had lied to police about witnessing him pulling the pins out of two grenades because he has a gammy arm, the Durban Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

In fact, Joel Mahoase told the Durban Magistrate’s Court that he did not even have possession of the two grenades – one of which exploded and mortally wounded his wife Lesego – in the early hours of August 31.

Mahoase, who took the stand in a bid to get bail, told the court that while he would abide by his advocate’s advice not to go into the merits of the case against him, he would be pleading not guilty to the charges of murder and the unlawful possession of explosives.

“I was not in possession of those grenades and those grenades do not belong to me,” he said.

When pushed by Magistrate Vanitha Armu to say who had possession of the grenades, Mahoase said he would abide by his advocate’s advice not to answer questions that might implicate him.

When asked about how the grenades were thrown, he replied: “My left arm can hardly pick up anything”.

It emerged that his relationship with his wife had been anything but peaceful.

He had sought to obtain a protection order against his wife. In June he was granted a protection order against his wife physically and verbally abusing him.

In the application – some of which was read to the court – for the protection order, it was revealed that Mahoase’s left arm had been damaged after his wife had stabbed him. After that incident he needed seven stitches.

“She drinks and smokes and every time she is under the influence she becomes violent,” he wrote in his application.

Grenade attack: no attempted murder charge

Durban - The State has decided not to add two more charges of attempted murder against a former South African Air Force colonel, accused of murdering his wife after he allegedly threw a hand grenade at her which exploded in their Amanzimtoti home, the Durban Magistrate’s Court heard on Tuesday.

This emerged during the closing arguments in the bail application of murder accused Joel Mahoase, who also faced a charge of unlawful possession of explosives.

Prosecutor Sharon Moodley said the State was not opposing bail and did not believe Mahoase was a flight risk.

Asked by Magistrate Vanitha Armu, whether the State would be seeking to charge Mahoase with attempted murder in relation to his two children, aged five and eight years, who were asleep in the house at the time of the August 30 incident, Moodley said: “The State has not made a decision to charge him on two accounts of attempted murder.”

Advocate Paul Jorgensen, for Mahoase, told the court that his client had a “very good chance of being acquitted”, especially since the case against him was based on the testimony of one person.

Jorgensen pointed out that there was no forensic evidence against his client and it was not clear who had obtained the grenades. Mahaose and his wife Lesego had both worked for the SA Air Force. He said that the State did not have a strong case.

Jorgensen said his client had handed himself in to the police and was therefore not a not a flight risk .

He said the State hadn’t presented any evidence that his client would interfere with witnesses, intimidate anyone, or even that there would be a public outcry.

Grenade attack: accused denied bail

Durban - A former South African Air Force (SAAF) Colonel accused of blowing his wife up with a hand grenade was denied bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Handing down her decision, Magistrate Vanitha Armu said she did not believe releasing Joel Mahoase on bail would be in the interests of justice.

She said: “This is a callous act of murder. This is not your average case of murder.”

In the early hours of August 31, Mahoase is alleged to have thrown two hand grenades into the kitchen of his Amanzimtoti home. One of these exploded, mortally wounding his wife Lesego.

Armu made the ruling despite the fact that the prosecution did not oppose the granting of bail.

“The applicant had every intention to ensure that his wife did not survive,” she said

Armu said she did not believe Mahoase would be acquitted of the charges of murder and the unlawful possession of explosives.
