A man has been arrested for driving 192km/h on the N1 north in Midrand, Gauteng, Johannesburg metro police said on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was arrested on Saturday night, driving a red Toyota Auris, and was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court this week, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"The JMPD Sandton high speed unit photographed 133 [other] motorists with their speed camera for speeding on the N1 north in Midrand last night, which is a 120km/h zone."

These motorists would receive their notices in the post, Minnaar said.

What happens if you receive a registered mail demanding you appear in court and you ignore it?

Toyota Auris
I'd fight that in court as a impossibility...................

Yeesh, not buying the car model being able to reach that speed normally.

Any huge downhill sections on the specified piece of road?

Also, why so many speedsters last night specifically?

Yes, New Road down to Olifantfontein, in daytime they always camp behind the Olifantfontein bridge (N1 North) to catch the people.

Just those many speedsters because JMPD was there to catch them, they are there even if JMPD isn't there.

I've seen the high speed unit operating exactly there late at night.

One night I saw them pull over 3 speeding drivers there. The one they only managed to catch up to just before the Brakfontein interchange he was going that fast, it was some Merc coupe, they generally sit and wait next to the road just before the Shell garage

Well ... if the 1991 Delta Motor Corporation South Africa Opel Monza 160i GSi CoTY can reach 192kmph, then surely ...

On that stretch, you best not hog the right hand lane at 120. It's like a racing circuit and if there is a slow vehicle in the right hand lane, the speedsters split all over the 4 lanes to get through as fast as possible.

They should just take the vehicle as a fine for people > 50% of the limit for the 120km/hr limit.. i.e. > 180km/h +/- prison if they don't pull over.

This is Gauteng, zero tolerance is needed and if there is a fine guys will bribe their way out besides the usual people getting lawyers involved. F*** them, you go that fast, you lose your vehicle. how's that for a thrill :D

If the JMPD is anything like the useless bunch in Cape Town they only go after cars with number plates and those drivers without plates are completely free to do whatever they like.

Anything 40km/h+ on highways and 30km/h+ on urban roads in Gauteng carry a charge of Reckless and/or negligent driving with an alternate charge of exceeding the speed limit. Both of which carry a criminal record if convicted and a mandatory 6 month suspension of your driving licenses (Which our pathetic courts never enforce)

Carmag.co.za quotes top speed at 220Km/h (2011 TRD model) .... and if it wasn't for this post, I would have said 220 down a mine shaft!!

Must have had a tailwind and heading downhill at the time .......
