Durban - One man was arrested after several skirmishes between police and protesters in Chesterville, Durban, on Saturday night.
A group of protesters, numbering in the hundreds, blocked part of the N2 which runs adjacent to the township, three times over the course of several hours.
Riot police faced-off with the stone-wielding protesters and fired rubber bullets to disperse them.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that late in the afternoon police had been called to the junction of Booth and Dunbar roads in Cato Manor, which had been blockaded.
"A group of about 400 people blocked the road with burning tyres and stones at the corner of Booth and Dunbar roads in Cato Manor. Police were called and the police had to use rubber bullets to disperse them when the protesters were throwing stones at the police. They also used slingshots," he said.
"The crowd moved to N2 freeway where they again blocked the road with burning tyres and stones. More manpower was called and one suspect was arrested and will be charged for public violence and malicious damage to property," Zwane added.
