Paris - A man has committed suicide by climbing up the Eiffel Tower and jumping to his death, Paris police said on Monday.

Police spotted the man climbing the structure of the tower around 23:30 (local time) on Sunday. They evacuated the tower, sealed off the area and tried to negotiate with the man, who spoke English, a police source said.

The negotiations failed and the man jumped from between the tower's second level and the top, a height of between 125 and 324m.

Suicides by jumping from the tower "happen frequently enough, but it is rare for someone to be able to climb so high", a police source said.

Built in two years by engineer Gustave Eiffel as the centrepiece of the 1889 world fair, the Eiffel Tower is a hallmark of the Paris skyline and one of the most visited tourist sites in the world, with 7.1 million visitors in 2011, an average of nearly 20 000 visitors per day.

So negotiations failed because the police realised the man spoke english and they couldn't care anymore...

I would think so!;)

LMAO. Yeah my reaction was kinda along the same lines. :D

Man dies after jumping from Eiffel Tower

That was the intention wasn't it?

I'd be surprised to read 'Man doesn't die after jumping from Eiffel Tower'

I was just about to say that this isn't a very newsworthy article heading. I'd be far more intrigued by "Man survives after jumping from Eiffel Tower"

Or...even better..."Eiffel Tower survives after jumping from man."

Must've been after him seeing his english team get knocked off from the Euro 2012.

Jumping off Eifel Tower, dead. That'll do it. Article's so lame that the editor or journo had to get to his quota by filling us in on the history of the tower and tourism stats. Adds real value  The headline as a tweet would've been enough.
