Johannesburg - A Zimbabwean man died during a raid on his house in Johannesburg by a Hawks team searching for one of South Africa's most wanted criminals, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

"The team had information that the man [Mthungameli Mpofu] was seen with Bongani Moyo last week," said McIntosh Polela.

"They went to his house in the early hours of yesterday [Wednesday] morning to detain him and question him. I am told he apparently resisted arrest and after a scuffle he collapsed and died," he said.

Moyo has allegedly been linked to more than 30 bank robberies. He escaped from the Pretoria Regional Court on August 10.

Polela said the Hawks team "assured" him that they used minimal force in the raid on Mpofu's home.

The Independent Complaints Directorate was called to the scene and was investigating the incident.

Mpofu had been wanted for a bank robbery in Zimbabwe, said Polela.

The Hawks had also arrested him last year for defrauding a bank.

"He allegedly used someone else's ID to get a bond for a house in Springs. When he was arrested last year we found 11 different IDs on him," said Polela.

Mpofu was out on bail at the time of his death.

Polela said the Hawks were still searching for Moyo, who was on crutches at the time of his court escape.

Good stuff

Eh... Bongani Moyo was re-arrested 3 weeks after he walked out of court in August  so they could not have been searching for him yesterday... unless someone has not told the Hawks that he is in custody.

Pretoria - Robbery accused Bongani Moyo told a Pretoria court on Thursday that he had toothache and could not participate in the trial for his escape from the same court in August.

He told the Pretoria Magistrate's Court that he had been "unwell since Monday and had received some pills" to ease the pain.

The matter was postponed until January 24.

Prosecutor Werner Gibson said the State had been ready to proceed with the matter and had brought in witnesses.

More than 10 armed police officers escorted Moyo into the courtroom. His hands were handcuffed behind him.

Speaking faintly and sometimes using head gestures, Moyo told the court he had been given a copy of the docket to prepare for the trial, as he had opted to conduct his own defence.

Moyo made headlines when he allegedly walked out of the court on August 10, while on crutches. He was arrested three weeks later.

It was not the Zimbabwean's first escape attempt. In March, Moyo slipped out of Boksburg prison. He was arrested almost three months later.

Moyo and co-accused Leon Ncube, Thabani Sibanda and Khubulani Sibanda face a string of armed robbery charges.

All four are in custody and will appear on December 13 on the robbery charges.

Ahh, perhaps his friend was shocked to discover that the person he was with wasn't him.
