If this firearm was stolen from a private citizen, they'd be prosecuted for negligence or whatever the charge is, and I wonder if this cop and others that so casually "loose" their weapons are prosecuted.

Man held for having cop gun

A man has been arrested for shooting a 22-year-old man with a police firearm and injuring two others, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

According to Superintendent Nzukisi Mzukisi the 23-year-old who was out of prison on parole, broke into a policeman's home and stole his service pistol on Friday afternoon before he went to Highbury Locality.

It depends on the circumstances of the loss. If the gun was lying around and you left a door open, then I'd say big trouble. If it was hidden and the theft was not easy to prevent, then he would be treated the same as any citizen.

Unless the criminal went at the safe with a blow torch, the plod is in trouble. Hiding a gun is not safe keeping it.

Well, I agree that hiding != safekeeping.

But I'm pretty sure the cop won't be treated "the same as any citizen".

So, you get out of prison, and you beeline to a cop's house (you know where the cop lives) and you break in because you know his pistol is not secured? Sounds, let's say, just a little fishy to me.

My only question is whether the cop sold/rented him the gun at the prison when he was released or whether he had to take a taxi to the cop's home.

They fly drugs in and out, where do you think "lost guns" comes from S.A factories? So a cop lost his Gun yes it could be corruption and the guy payed a "spot fine" and got a gun with the deal or he really did loose his gun... cops suffer from trauma with the state they are in I would not be surprised if he gets confused.
