Man kills one robber, injures two others

Johannesburg – A Johannesburg man has shot and killed one man and injured two others after they allegedly tried to rob him at an ATM near Oriental Plaza on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said police had opened a robbery and inquest docket after the man was killed.

"It is alleged that the man was withdrawing money from the ATM when he was accosted by three men," Masondo said.

"The man drew a firearm and shot at the alleged robbers killing one instantly and the other two were taken to hospital under police guard," he said.

He said police investigations were ongoing.

Security guard arrested after shooting at alleged Oriental Plaza robbers

A security guard has been arrested after he shot at three men who he claimed tried to rob him as he was withdrawing money from an ATM near the Oriental Plaza shopping complex in Johannesburg‚ police said on Monday.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the man has been charged with murder and attempted murder as one of his victims was killed.

Mbele said the man claimed to have been trying to withdraw money from the ATM on Sunday morning when he was interrupted by the three.

"[He claims] two males disturbed him at the ATM and [he] lost his bank card‚" said Mbele. The man believed his card had been swallowed by the machine.

"When he tried to confront them they jumped into a white Renault Stepway. He fired several shots at the car.

A 24-year-old male passenger in the car was declared dead on the scene by the paramedics; he was shot several times in the upper body. The driver and the other passenger were also shot several times in the upper body and taken to hospital‚" Mbele said.

The men were not under police guard as they were not yet suspected of any crime‚ said Mbele.

FFS this pisses me off.

According to the law he was wrong to shoot as he wasn't in danger so it was not self defence... but now these guys will get away without much or any punishment and an otherwise law abiding productive citizen gets punished.

Can't see that happening as he allegedly shot them while they were fleeing in their car. Only way he might be able to to justify it is if they were driving toward him when he shot them.

From the second article I doubt that... they fled and were in a vehicle. Unless they were pointing a weapon at him or attempting to run him over, his life wasn't in danger and therefore he had no right to fire at them. The basic "right to life " trumps all others in SA law.

My ire is not necessarily focused on this situation, but the south african mentality that criminals have rights (which they do) and those rights seem to trump the law abiding populations rights when they defend themselves or attempt any action against the criminals.
