Man presumed drowned in PE

A man who tried to rescue a friend who nearly drowned after diving off Shark Rock Pier, Port Elizabeth, is presumed drowned, the NSRI said on Friday.

On Thursday, the first man began struggling in the water after he jumped from the pier, National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

His 25-year-old friend dived in after him to try and help him.

Bystanders rescued the first man, but his friend got into difficulty.

"[He] was last seen by eye-witnesses lying face down in the water and being swept out to sea by rip currents."

Despite extensive searches, there has been no further sighting of the man, who is presumed to have drowned.

Police divers were searching for him.

Possibly made contact with those concrete slabs in the water that holds the pillars for the pier?
 
This is flipping stupid. When I was a kid, I would swim out past the pier and sometimes, there would be a sand bank out there that you can stand on and the water was just beneath your knees. I recall a sign posted on the pier warning people not to jump.

I've jumped off there twice in a row, at 3am, in my undies. I recall the water was much deeper those days in the early/mid '90s, compared to the last time I was there. I remember there was concrete leading straight out in-line with the pier, and rocks on the left, so jumping to the right was safer.
 
This is worthy of special mention in the Darwin Awards.
