Man shoots cop then himself in Lenasia

A Johannesburg policeman was shot on Thursday after attempting to stop and search a man in Thembelihle informal settlement in Lenasia, Gauteng police said.

The 33-year-old officer was shot on the left side of his chest by the man, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

After the shooting the man -- believed to be in his 30s -- ran into the informal settlement where he shot himself in the upper body.

"He died on the spot. The officer is being treated in hospital."
