What is the benefit of having an ADSL line being managed by a service provider rather than telkom itself. many times i have tried to deal with the service provider but i end up dealing with telkom to get the problem sorted. How far can service providers go in terms of managing an ADSL line?

As MickeyD said. It's pretty convenient. Afrihost did a good job with my line while I had it with them. I don't know about other ISP's (other than Crystal Web, who don't offer it), but with Afrihost you get some nifty Clientzone functionality too. You can resync your own line, reset your own port, run diagnostics etc.

Correction: Telkom removed the resync, reset port function etc via their API as ISPs abused it and allowed Clients to resync their lines themselves which caused unnecessary call outs for Telkom Technicians because people set their sync rates too high which caused instability etc.

Soon telkom social media teams will stop servicing customers who have their lines with another ISP and will direct you to contact your ISP directly...

That sounds really odd, because Afrihost didn't let you choose your sync rate. It was chosen automatically based on your line stats.
