thats the new company's offer. Current company is 1x.
difficult to answer this on a forum you know, we don't know the background and history or context. so we'll keep it generic.
1. you've got to cast your mind back to the reason you were wanting to leave in the first place.
a. if it was that you were not feeling fairly remunerated for the work that you did, then you need to communicate that to your manager.
b. if its a case of you were just unhappy with the job you were doing, then regardless of counter offers, ask yourself will you be more happy for more money?
2. the psychology of counter offers is very interesting. there's a part of you that resists change naturally. so the mind will want to find more reasons to stay where you are (to resist the change and possible trauma with it). often, the biggest lie your mind tells you is "if you had more money you would be happier". its never like that is it? because more money always means more responsibility, higher expectations and more work.
there's a whole science to job satisfaction, i won't go into it here (unless someone wants to pay
but the bottom line is that there are a number of things that make people happy, according to research. [remember, you're still a people and so not all of the below will apply to every one of you reading this... but its the 'generic' model]
- money
- autonomy
- opportunity for growth
- opportunity to learn and develop
- social environment at work
- your boss has a hot body you like to look at
- your colleague has a hot body you like to look at
- you are the hot body everyone else likes to look at
the list is long, but money, autonomy, opportunity to grow and develop are all big drivers in the corporate world.
there's a very unsophisticated approach as well... it goes like this:
"3x salary? wtf, how can i get myself fired here and start at the new place tomorrow?"
whichever route you go, make sure you understand clearly:
- what is expected of you
- how you will be measured
- exactly what your outputs are
- what support structures/tools you will have to deliver the outputs
- your salary package and how incentives work etc
- good to know if your new boss likes chainsaws, swords, or MMA fighting
good luck!
