Manual vs Automatic

Be careful what you wish for. My neighbour's Audi gearbox started giving problems, and had to be replaced. The cost of R50K was covered by the warranty, but you have to drive a lot to justify that sort of expense. .

Audi has four different types of gearboxes including manual, DCT auto, torque converter auto and CVT.

Audi's multitronic boxes are crap and always give crap, rather get something bullet proof like an auto ZF 8 speed in the BMW's and other cars.

Audi's CVT gearboxes used to be horrendous but in recent years I haven't heard of many issues with them but I would still go for a torque converter automatic as you suggest as they have gotten better and better and have proved very reliable.

What is Audi's oil service interval on their CVT's?
CVTs normally pack up because the oil isn't changed regularly.

What normally fails in the Audi CVTs?

I couldn't tell you, I have never owned any CVT gearbox, I just heard some of the horror stories in the late 00's and early 10's around Audi CVT's failing and requiring hefty repair bills.

Didn't know Audi did CVT, only DCT or Auto. CVT is usually Nissan, Honda or Toyota because they're designed for maximum fuel economy, not performance.

They did CVT, I drove an A4 long time ago with a CVT.

The only gearbox I trust in a VAG product it the ZF 8 speed auto as found in the Amarok V6. That thing shifts better than DCT and will last longer too. VAG knows - that is why they fitted it.

I love the GM M32 (Opel/Alfa/Fiat) 6-speed manual in my car. It slick, precise and direct - attributes a remote (cable) shift often lacks. But when it goes I'll call it a day and buy automatic.

This is my 4th Audi, all of them either tip- or multitronic, first one I did 325k km with & current one is sportline so I drive it like a bat out of hell, plus the ex-wife had 2.. yet strangely not a single iota of gearbox issues with any of them?

Must be the same thing you've heard that all Fords leak oil..

50K for a gearbox replacement of a CVT box is a bargain... A manual gearbox in most new cars is going to set you back that much as well, if not more.

Those ZF boxes are next level and we have factory support for them in SA so even more of a winner.

Are the Tiptronic and Multitronic both CVTs?
How often did/do you replace the gearbox oil?

R50-60k seems to be the ceiling on CVT repairs from what I have seen.

What manual gearbox other than on an exotic vehicle costs R50k to repair?

Can't find the local price on it, but the 6spd manual in the BMW F30 seems to retail for around 4000 Euros uninstalled as an example.

For a brand new complete BMW gearbox from the agents for sure you are going to get ripped something epic but manual gearboxes very rarely need outright replacement, normally it's a synchro or bearings or a gear or 2 that need replacing.

Well the same can apply to an automagic as well really... with the right person you don't need to replace the whole damn thing.

But the comparison was his "neighbour's" Audi needed a gearbox replacement and the warranty covered the R50k cost... which would indicate a new one was bought from Audi since even aftermarket warranties don't generally cover second hand units, and I doubt you can get a pirate gearbox...
