Year-on-year manufacturing production decreased by 1.2 percent in August 2014, Statistics SA said on Thursday.
The decrease was mainly due to lower production in wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing (-11.3 percent and contributing 1.1 percentage points) and petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (-3.9 percent and contributing -0.9 of a percentage point).
There was also lower production in glass and non-metallic mineral products (-13.4 percent and contributing -0.6 of a percentage point), basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery (-3.1 percent and contributing -0.6 of a percentage point); and food and beverages (-2.0 percent and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point).
The motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment division was a significant positive contributor (31.7 percent and contributing 2.3 percentage points).
Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 1.4 percent in the three months ended August 2014 compared with the previous three months.
Eight of the 10 manufacturing divisions reported negative growth rates over this period.
The largest negative contribution to the decrease of 1.4 percent was made by the basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division (-5.0 percent and contributing -1.0 percentage point).
Nedbank said in a statement on Thursday that the performance of the manufacturing sector would "remain lacklustre in the months ahead".
"While output growth could be boosted by base effects, improving global demand and a weaker rand, this will be offset by weak domestic demand," it said.
"Underlying local economic conditions remain weak."
