Got myself the Marantz 1402 & Jamo combo from Dion Wired this weekend. Everything is working great so far, except that I've plugged my dstv decoder into the amp using the AV (Red/White/Yellow) cables and although I can get the sound to the speakers I don't get any picture on my tv. I've only got the hdmi out going to the tv and from the manual it seems like I need to use a yellow video cable from the amp to the tv to get picture.
This is a minor annoyance as I was hoping to avoid changing channels/inputs on my tv...

Is there another solution? Other than getting an hd pvr. Can I get an av to hdmi converter for cheap?
Or does anyone else own this amp and know of a way of getting it to work?

I can't remember if the 1402 does HDMI Upscaling,

Will try find out for you.

Ok, basic check on the Marantz Website (http://us.marantz.com/us/products/pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=avreceivers&ProductId=NR1402), indicates that the NR1402 does not do Video Upscaling, so if you have an analog video input into the amp, you will need an analog output going to the TV.

You could use the following : http://www.hdcabling.co.za/composit...-and-combines-audio-to-hdmi-stream-p-159.html
But at R800, its probably better to just get yourself an HDPVR.... if you have a decent HD TV, then it just makes sense to do so as the HD channels on DStv are actually quite good.

Don't route your tv through the amp. DSTV content are Macrovision protected. Take the cable straight to the tv from the PVR.

You will get broken pictures.

Complete POPPYCOCK...

I route my DStv through my amp and don't get broken pictures, NEVER have....
The only Issue I have is with DStv's pisspoor implementation of HDCP.

Hmm, thanks for that guys. Kind of annoyed that I missed this piece of info before buying the amp :/

That's not correct B.O.F.H. Lack of upscaling does not mean it won't play analog signals through HDMI, it only means it doesn't upscale the signal to the amplifier's native resolution.

Double check your settings and connections krepunk.

The 1402 does do audio return, so you can try plugging the AV cables (red/white/yellow) into the TV, and you should get sound through through the amp since you have it connected via HDMI. Make sure that the HDMI cable connected to your TV is plugged in to the ARC HDMI Out port on the amp (the one on the far right in the pic below).

Then on the amp, you'll need to select 'TV' as the source.

That said, I would personally get an HD PVR and enjoy surround sound.

Cool thanks.
So if I understand correctly the audio singal for the dstv will come through the ARC Out Hdmi port?
But I'll still need to have the tv on AV to view?

In terms of the way Marantz word their stuff.. it does....

There is no Upscaling chipset in the amp so it doesn't convert analog video to Digital.

Eish, a lot of BS over here.
Do what Mike Hoxbig suggested.
Your TV should then be set to the HDMI port where you plugged the HDMI cable in, not AV.
You DO NOT need a HD decoder to get stereo or surround sound.
Your standard decoder should be fine. Just make sure you set your standard decoder to STEREO.
The AMP should then do the decoding for you :)

You seem to have missed it.. the sound is not his problem, but the picture is..

Unfortunately the NR1402 doesn't "upscale" or do analog to digital conversion.. so expecting the video signal passed into a normal AV port on the amp to be output over the HDMI is a bit much.
