marathon

Bungie HAS to do gang buster numbers with Marathon, they are on thin ice with Sony who spent billions acquiring them.
It won't be enough to just be ok. Sony expects big returns on that massive investment.

Marathon has the same weakness of every online live service game.
Once the perception is that the game is dying, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A negative feedback loop of people leaving because of lower player numbers, which people take notice of, which makes people leave, which people take notice of... etc etc etc.

Helldivers 2 is an exception for a reason, HD2 succeeded in part because of the community that formed around the game. It played into the Star ship troopers' theme hard, and people picked up on that, they continue to play into other pop culture elements which is appealing to people. I mean just go look at the steam community page for HD2, it is a never-ending stream of memes and sht posts. But marathon has none of the charm or identity that HD2 offers. The neon puke "Runners" that walk everywhere do not have the same appeal or ability to create a community.

I mean people had to convince them to add proximity chat in the game, how is a community supposed to organically form within the game if just talking to other players was not even a consideration at the start.

It is entering a niche market when people have already had their fill of games of this genre.

I am 100% certain Marathon will not last, the HZD game has even less of a chance.
None of the spin off titles in the Horizon universe have succeeded. People like HZD because it's a single-player story driven RPG with Alloy. That's it. The extended world of HZD beyond the adventures of Alloy is just not that interesting.

I don't disagree with anything, but HD2 was also clowned on before it released. No one expected it to go nuclear. It's just how these things are sometimes, calling every single game "Concord" doesn't help anyone either. Bungie is still somewhat revered and have a decent fanbase willing to check the game out. Regardless, I expect some layoffs after Marathon anyway as they probably need to trim, and hopefully realign themselves and work on D3.

Also, unless you are part of the board meetings no one knows what Sony's expectations are.

As for HZD, the genre of monster hunter likes is quite popular, I can see it finding an audience, but again no skin off my back as I'm not even a fan of the franchise or games. I do wish they put a different dev on it though, seems like a waste to have Guerilla on it.

Spending billions on acquiring a studio to not expect a greater return in investment.

Bungie has burned a lot of the fanbase good will over the years; they have just enough left that Marathon will linger on much longer than other titles but will never be considered a true success or outright failure. Just a slow death by a thousand cuts.

Horizon hunters gathering vs Monster Hunter World / Wilds. A well-established game franchise with a fanbase that likes the Japanese art style, not to mention MHW has much more interesting world and monsters.
HHG game has all the same monsters you have already seen in HZD.

Not sure who is green lighting these titles. They never sit and think about their potential customer for longer than 5 secs.

Looking for Someone who played HZD that liked the singe player experience but is now willing to play a drop-in session-based team-based monster hunter game that has none of the characters from the game you liked. Same person also has to like the different art style of HHG that is completely different to HZD. Also, you have to now be ok to buy in with micro transactions continuously unlike HZD. On a Ven diagram this is the tiniest of cross sections.

These are the same geniuses that thought a God of War live service multiplayer game was a good idea. Only to cancel it after 5 years of development. Making garbage like that instead of just focusing on what people already responded positively to.

I 1000% disagree with calling games Concord does not help.
"We know you didn't like this, so we made something just like it but with a different name. Money please."
Ok bro.

The hubris and toxic positivity that convinced them there was 0% chance they would fail, that there is no need to even get outside testers for feedback is exactly why they need to be clowned on hard. Come back down to reality and get in touch with what people actually want to play. It's because no one is willing or able to tell it like it is to their face that they waste years of their lives on a doomed product.

There is a peculiar tendency for people to want to handle developers or anyone in the entertainment industry with kid gloves.
Stop being so mean to the poor developers. Meanwhile people have no qualms about doing the same with physical products like PC hardware for example. If it sucks, they need to be told it sucks, does not help anyone if they are not told they are making a pos no one is going to play.

This. 👆

They are all just hunting the next live service hit that will rake in Billions. Chasing the Fortnite dream.

There is always room for a live service hit, but it needs to come organically like an Arc Raiders, Helldivers, Tarkov, Fortnite etc. because gamers smell money chasing garbage a mile away.

Sure, social media kills games much faster than what they would have 15 years ago but social media can also be a tool to see what customers are looking for. The arrogance of some of these companies are at such a level that they genuinely believe we, the customer, don't know what we want.

Then once the game fails, they quickly rush to social media to cry about how toxic the community is.

Not great but not bad either, positive reviews are also good news for Bungie.
Only time will tell if the game will be able to retain the player base.

Way lower than the 143000 on server slam, but I guess that's cause it was free?
Yeah, likely bump up over the weekend. Noticed quite a lot of streamers reporting they have been paid for sponsored Marathon stream on Saturday so it is possible that is when it could reach its launch week peak concurrent players.

What happened to you Bungie?

Thats a bit scummy, dropping half a game and telling reviewers not to judge said half.

What happened to you Bungie?
Route all of them goes if not larian?

Blizzard
Bioware
Bethesda
<inser>

I see a patten here Bs

I guess I just want a single player experience with multiplayer optional.

This enforced squadding up business just doesn't work for me.

Have you tried Arc Raiders?

but apparently this is supposed to be the game that will kill Arc Raiders

Game is very challenging. Very good. Tarkov players will love this.
ai is unforgiving.
Constantly got to keep your head on a swivel. Everything wants to kill you.
