Hi there,

My scenario (What I'm Currently Using)
--------------------------------------
OS: Linux Red Hat Release 9.0
ADSL Device: Marconi - ADSL Router POTS (Ehternet)
PPPoE Program: Roaring Penguin v3.5.2
--------------------------------------

I have tried everything to get this device act as a
dumb device. Reset to factory settings, changing the
ip address. Nothing works.

I require some input from you guys, if you have experienced
the same problem with this specific ADSL device.

The reason I'm asking is that, I have done the exact same
setup for someone else (OS & PPPoE Program). Only difference
is that the ADSL device was a Alcatel Ethernet Device. With
that device I don't get any problems. The ADSL ip address is
bound to the Linux box. But in this case I can't get it working.

Any ideas? Please if you have time, please reply.

Note: Using the Marconi ADSL device as a router works fine. But
I want the ADSL ip address bound to the Linux box and not the
ADSL device.

I haven't had experiance doing this at all... Perhaps trying bridging the connections?
 
Thx, tried bridging between the two ports (WAN & LAN). No success.
That's why I'm wondering if someone had a same problem like this.

Will the SW-Upgrade for the modem perhaps work? Just asking
cause I heard somewhere that when you do the FirmWare Update
the ADSL device becomes unstable.

Seriously though, I'm busy looking at the web interface now, and it doesn't really seem to be any obvious setting there. Unless of course, its one of those other items you see when you click in the Quick Setup (top menu option) first screen. 'Cos what I'm thinking is that you're choosing whether the modem must emulate the PPPoE protocol which you're wanting to do yourself. Try one of those other ones... most likely of which I would say *thumb sucks*...... "Ethernet Over ATM ( RFC 1483 Bridge Mode )"
 
Vie is correct. First do a reset to factory default. The goto quickstart, choose the EoA - Bridged option, keep clicking next and then finished. Save and restart. Thats all you need. I think you might also need the modem's ip set up as your gateway, and your ip address needs to be in a similar range to the modems, eg 192.160.10.120.
 
Thx will check that out....once I get a new ADSL device again.

The 'thing' decided it was time to stop working all together.
No SYNC, No LAN, No nothing accept the Power LED. Nothing
wrong with the line, nothing wrong with NIC on my box.

Maybe they should just take it back... when they take it
back. What other ADSL device would you guys suggest?

I would personally recommend the Netgear range of ADSL routers. If you need the built-in 4-port hub, go for the DG814, else go for the DM602.

I do have one question though, why run the Linux gateway when you can just get the router to do all the NAT and port forwarding for you? Configuration is far simpler using this method.

I'll go check there for the modems.

Because I love Linux!! (as a server based system). Can do more things with the box if the ADSL IP is mapped to the box and not the router.

They brought me an Alcatel Speed Touch Home.
All working fine now [:D] [:D] [:D]

I got a Alcatel Speed Touch 340 adsl modem from taiwan. I can't find a manual anywhere. What I actually need is the username and Password for the web interface.

Anybody know these modems? Or know where to get a manual?
