So im getting ready for adsl again. I have a telkom marconi router /modem to use. But in cant connect to the router. I used the default gateway ip 192.168.1.1 i got with a ipconfig, i used the default ip address of the router 10.0.0.2, both in firefox but no luck. I also pinged both ip's but i just get time outs. The lan link light on the router is on, and it says connected in network connections. I tried 3 different lan cables, i reset the router. I also tried repairing the connection, but also no luck. What can it be? faulty router? Can it be repaired? I know I can buy a new one, but first i want to try this one. I have kaspersky antivirus installed, but it never had problems with the router. Where can i check?

There is something wrong with your setup. If your default gateway is 192.168.1.1 you will not be able to access your router 10.0.0.2. Change your default gateway to 10.0.0.2. Or set your pc to get its network address from the routers DHCP. Your pc should get an ip address in the range of 10.0.0.X and default gateway of 10.0.0.2.

Exactly,

depending on your SO, goto control pane > network connections > right click on "Local Area Connection". In the Scroll window, select "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click on properties. Then enter the following information:
IP adress: 10.0.0.3
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.2
DNS 10.0.0.2.

Then you should be able to goto the modems setup page in your browser with 10.0.0.2. Also check if you dont have a proxy on.

Sorry if you know all of this, just thought i would add step by step...err...steps

which marconi router need the model cos the ip address could be different some of the older marconi's used to be 192.168.10.200
agree with prof.merlin check your proxy that could be a problem too

God, I am clueless. I read macaroni...:o

Okay, first of all, I dont see any model number on the router, all I can tell is it's a marconi wifi 4 port router. Then, I did enter the settings prof.merlin said, but still the same. I'm a complete noob with this network stuff, so please explain what I must do. Where can i check the proxy?

The proxy settings are web browser related and not related to the router.

In Firefox you can find the proxy settings under Tools -> Options... -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings...
In IE8 you can find the proxy settings under Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings

So got the chance now to check the settings, "no-proxy" were selected in firefox settings. Also tried a few lan cables now, still no luck. Anything else I can check? If I know for certain that my router is faulty then I will buy a new one. Will a pc shop test it for me if I take it?

Reset the router. Hold the reset button in for 30 seconds. Do it a couple of times if needed. Also set you DHCP to automatic. The LAN settings can be changed from the router configuration.

Also make sure you have no other DHCP clients on the network. After that check the IP again.

I also have a Marconi, fairs much better than the Billion IMHO (7300). Billion takes ages to start up (more than a minute), constantly drops the connection on my line (yet my Marconi and other Telkom router does not, both report no errors, no drops, etc.). I've already got a Linksys WRT54GL (running DD-WRT) for my advanced routing purposes, all I need is a reliable modem, which the Billion most definitely is not.

Okay I reset the router a few times now, now it says limited or no connectivity. Where can I check the dhcp client settings, or if there is other dhcp clients? Now if I do a ipconfig the default gateway is left blank, but I did set the ip settings all to automatic, like it was before. So now, let I begin:

If I open the lan or high speed properties, I see the following:
Client for microsoft networks ( checked)
Kaspersky antivirus ndis filter ( checked )
Odyssey network agent ( unchecked and dissabled too)
File and printer settings for b;ah bah blah ( checked)
Qos packet scheduler (checked)
Internet protocol tcip/ip ( checked)

Now under internet protocol settings, everything is set to automatic. Must I set it back to the settings mentioned earlier?

And where can I check further?

Sorry, I know I'm stupid.....

So now again I've reset the router, changed the settings exactly to what profmerlin said. When I do a ipconfig, the default gateway is 10.0.0.2, but if I ping that ip, I just get request timed out. I also cant log onto the router via 10.0.0.2, and frequently I get "limited or no connectivity" from my lan icon.

I'm fed up.

Reboot the pc and if it does not work, go to network connections, right click, choose properties and right click your adapter and click repair.
Also, are you sure that the adsl has been activated and verified?

I did try to repair many times, but it just got stuck at "renewing ip address". And then tells me it could not be repaired. And no, I dont have adsl yet, this whole thing is just to connect the router to the laptop.
