Marconi Router Modem password

It is the user’s responsibility to change the default password: But I reckon the manual that is supplied with the Marconi is woefully inadequate; it should at the very least suggest that the password be changed, and walk the inexperienced user through the steps required to do so.

Though experienced users have no excuse—they should know better than to leave the default passwords unchanged.

On a different tack: Does anyone know how to close the telnet port? Also anyone know what the purpose of port 110 (POP3) being open? And can it be closed?

Simply delete the telnet users and the port is effectively closed.

A colleague at work proudly stated to me today that he doesn't ever run out of bandwidth, because he just goes into another person's router and gets another logon. So be warned.

That's theft. Who is he?

I'm really confused now.
The default user/pass is root/root

If I changed that, im cool ? Or where does that insecurity occur ?

Reseting the Marconi modem resets the username and password back to the defaults, correct?

Also, if I use a wireless DSL router to create the PPPoE connection through the Marconi modem then I should not be vulnerable as I understand it. I'm not storing the user details in the modem so they can't be picked up through the conventional exploit.

Could someone verify this for me? I'd like to be sure I'm safe, for obvious reasons.

Thanks!
Angstrom.

Does this also affect you if you are running the router in bridge mode, i.e. PPPoE?

hey guys i cant find that telkom link, what settings must i change to make my router more secure?

hey all... need assistance please... For the past few days my server has been REALLY slow... also using the Macaroni Router (4ports)... I have a suspiscion that there is somebody on it other that my staff. The "so-called" bult in firewall is always disabled and when i change the password, the studid macaroni resets it back to the defualt password??? What do i do????????? How do i check for hackers? I have most of the current anti-assasin and anti-virus installed... and also getting the lsass.exe error, but its in my processes?????????? HELP PLEASE

Im sad to say that three outa ten ip's are still running default setups...its kinda sad that telkom charges so much and doesn't even bother with a proper setup on the clientside.......poor home users suffer the most.
Makes you think how many telkom staff members know about this and abuses it!!
Service my @ss

I don't bother with using the Marconi's authent software, the router is too unstable anyhow. Linux is waaay better, why?

* DDNS updates are sent at connection time and session restarts, not the next time windows checks IP
* IP address is set from the linux box, no request to another website for your current IP
* I have the box restart the connection at midnight, no annoying IP changes of disconnects during the day.
* Proper NAT, with support for some newer protocols.
* PBR - so some users are forwarded to different ADSL connections depending on the SRC IP and port, so two ADSL lines work happily together and I make sure EMail leave on one router, and bandwidth abusers go out on the same line.

Accessing PC via ADSL

How can i access my ADSL connected PC remotely over the internet.

Alternatively, can i host a web site on my PC and make it available on the internet.

Any ideas?

You IDIOTS!!!!!

Do you have any idea how many DSL Logins and encrypted online banking passwords we could've stolen by MODIFYING THE DNS SERVER ADDRESS in open ADSL Modem configuration pages!??!

Yes. Shh. Don't tell anyone. I put up this DNS Server that points everything to ME. And then forwards the user hyperintelligently to the correct site, via mine. Woohoo. It even impersonates SSH traffic. So nothing is really encrypted. It only seems that way.

Guys. You know what.

Somebody is doing this.

If they arent it only means that all computer geeks are idiots.

Or, I suppose, there is the slight possibility that they have a slight hint of integrity.

Then again, maybe if someone was sufficiently motivated to do so, they'd morph their integrity Robin-hood style and somehow even out the Monolithic Monopolic M

Hey. Screw the WWW. Lets start the MMM. The South African WWW that is only accessible after you have been capped.

Yes. Look for the Virtual Server setting on your modem/router. Also Dynamic DNS.

The former tells your modem which pc on your lan is meant to get traffic coming in on what port. The latter tells some DNS server on the internet what IP your ISP (I wonder who) has decided to give you today.

So you dont have to phone home and ask someone to check it for you :)

Hah.

Imagine your phone number changed every day or so, and you had to phone a billed-lots-per-second directory inquiry service to find out what your phone number is.

Only the rich would be able to spam you. Like... maybe people trying to sell you phone services that equate to a check box on their software. Geez, I suppose it really is hard work to find that little check box to "enable the voicemail option on that account" [that takes up 0.00000000...1% of their server space]

Marconi routers 4 port

Regarding the default user and pass on DSL modem/routers. I would say if a user advance to a permanent internet connection he must surely educate himself or get an educated person to setup his network and router's security. You can't blame vodacom for giving everyone a 1234 or 12345 password on their voicemail? Its the users' responsibility to secure his network. Telkom only sets up the internet connection, they don't even do ur LAN setup.

Regarding the marconi router where you can view the password by view source in ie, that is some MAJOR security flaw!

The only telnet option i can find in the setup of the marconi router is under Misc configuration scroll to command line interface. There you can choose console or telnet and disable WAN side you can tick/untick. Strange, my telnet from either side WAN/LAN doesn't work...

So this is all fine and all, your pc will reroute the info to your dns server. How would you go about getting the info? So only the DNS requests will go through your pc but the real info you are after will go directly to the server right? And then there is the 128bit encryption.

In not sure I understand you. how will you go about getting your IP everyday without calling home for someone to look it up?

I use the NoIP.org utility to resolve my IP to a normal url.
