Maroga steps down as Eskom CEO

If Maroga had been fired, he would have been eligible for a multi-million rand golden handshake.
:confused::mad:
This is something I do not understand with gov/quasi-gov institutions. There's got to be pretty damn good reason to be able to fire someone in this country, why is it necessary to reward their fsk-up ?

If I make such a hash of my job that I land up being fired ... that's it ... game over... do not pass begin... do not collect 200 rhondt ... and I'd be lucky to avoid a swift kick in the touchas on the way out the door

This happens in the private sector as well. Only difference is they go quietly and everybody pats each other on the back in the name of good relations/publicity.

My father says this used to happen at the company that he worked for during the 80's to mid 90's. Companies don't make these things known publicly because it's bad publicity since it gives the impresssion that they can't keep their house in order.

In most case the person receiving a golden handshake were employed through an employment contract.

Most lower level workers are employed through an employment letter. Those can be fired easily for such things as misconduct.

Correct and it still happens to this day, easier just to give the person a golden handshake.

private sector:
shareholders appoint board -> board appoints ceo
ceo is answerable to board -> board is answerable to shareholders

public sector:
minister appoints board -> minister appoints ceo
board has to ask minister for permission to force ceo resignation

spot the problem...
