Is the wedding between a man and a woman a joining between 2 halves or a joining between 2 wholes.

Meaning ...

Men and women have a drive to meet the other in order to fulfill their evolutionary and cultural need. Thus meaning they can't be content unless they are joined.

Or

... men and women are naturally obtuse and are only joined because of natural circumstances.

A wedding is an understanding of commitment between two people to live their lives together in the type of relationship they choose.

And... The first irrevocable step towards divorce.

Marriage is a promise between 2 whole people that they will stay together be it for love or to ensure that their offspring will have a better chance to survive -

In religion : in front of their god
In atheist : in front of a third party

that has consequences if you break that promise.

Actually a wedding is a religious ritual, you of all people should understand that. (Waiting for Karmic Sangoma to flame this Christian)

Yeah, like being born is your first step towards death. Just cause the end might suck doesnt mean that its not often worth it.

Not arguing with you at all... Clearly, I'm a cynic having been there and done that but I'd still recommend it... Let me clarify that, I'd recommend it to two people who know who they are and what they want as individuals and are prepared to put in all the effort required, with that in mind, at making their relationship work.

Sorry, is your question related to a Weeding or Marriage? One is a ritual, the other a lifetime commitment.

As a person who has experienced both rituals but so far only proved one of those commitments, I can say in my wise old age (@ 36) that marriage is a religous and not an evolutionary desire. Couples who are not religious tend to prefer life partnership compared to their religious counterparts who express the same union in the form of marriage.

This is the thinking of a man.

Now for the thinking of a woman:

Marriage is the commitment from the man that he will look after his wife (his woman), that he will be the hunter, that he will be the protector, and that will be faithful. The wedding is a religious ritual to indicate his commitment to this.

Now from me:

I'm on my second marriage and all I can say is that I no longer have the energy to go through all the crap in my life to do it a 3rd time. So if I'm stuck with the current wife for the rest of my life, its worth it.

marriage is overrated and unpractical in today's times.

Why would marriage need to be between a man and a woman?
Because that is the traditional meaning of the word.

Choose another word to represent a similar joining of people of the same sex, or posibly female unions may enjoy one name and male unions another, and unions with 3 or more ... well it starts to get confusing but there you have it we have a lot of work to do.

Man is Man Woman is Woman we can not be a whole but we can have a hole in the head if we get married (im married going well so far)

The reason why divorce rates are so high is because most young people (who have been babied by their mommies and daddies) thing with their genitals. Since they lack the emotional understanding of being a fully grown adult (even if they're adult already), they yearn to spend their life with someone, yet, can't be happy on their own (which fuels the need to be with someone). They get married and soon divorced.

Working on your own happiness and becoming whole THEN getting married to another whole person is what keeps a marriage alive and well. 2 wholes. Not 2 halves.

In terms of mathematics:

Person A (100%) + Person B (100%) = 100%

(assume 1 whole person is a 10)

10 + 10 = 20, meaning 50% + 50% = 100%

If they're only half:

5 + 5 = 10, meaning 25% + 25% = 50%

Most people would assume it would be "50% + 50% = 100%" because if you're 2 halves you make a whole... but they forget that the "whole" is made up of the sum of their 100% (2 people, not 1)...

when did I say religious?

When you said "wedding" - all weddings are religious and/or spiritual events even if only pagan. Just keep in mind your entering the domain of women here and they view weddings as serious stuff, they have a secret book that dictates how it must be done.

A wedding is never considered legit by the female partner until it involved the religious ceremony - the only ones that claim otherwise are those that never got the opportunity.

The traditional meaning of the word "atom" is "indivisible". Should we choose another word for the atom now that we know it isn't?

Marriage is no longer just a religious ceremony it is now a legal contract.
