Johannesburg - Interpol was exploring several options to arrest the alleged ringleader in the baby Marzanne Kruger assault case, a spokesperson said.
As long as Chakhoma Machaba remained in Mozambique, there was not much the police could do, and no legal way to bring him back into the country, said Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi, on behalf of Interpol.
"First, somebody has to put a request to Mozambique. If there's no extradition, there's not much we can do," said Zondi.
"His movements are being monitored and if he steps back into South Africa, we will arrest him."
He would not say for how long the police intended tracking him.
One option could be to have the trial in Mozambique, but this decision would be left up to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) because it fell under prosecutions, explained Zondi.
NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said he could not comment.
The 1-year-old baby and her minder were assaulted during a house robbery in Randburg last month.
Kruger was left blind as a result of her injuries and was recuperating at home after spending a month in hospital.
Two Mozambican men had been arrested, and one of them, Nelson Maphosa, was denied bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
His co-accused, Gerald Nyantumbo, abandoned his bail application.
The two were charged with aggravated robbery and attempted murder.
