On Sunday June 6 2010, reliable human rights organization RAHANA (EN | FA) reported that 26 people in Gezelhasar prison in Karaj, who had been charged with “drug-related offenses,” had been moved to solitary confinement in preparation for their imminent execution. The the lawyer of one of them has provided several names: Mohammad Jafari, Bagher Amini, Mohammad Azarfam, Mohammad Moradi, Nader Azarnoush and Mr. Soltanabadai. On the morning of June 7 2010, 13 of these 26 were executed.

Furthermore, there has been a recent, renewed urgency around the imminent executions of several known political prisoners: Zeinab Jalalian, Habibollah Latifi, Shirko Moarefi, Rostam Arkiya, Hossein Khezry, Anwar Rostami, Mohammad Amin Abdollahi, Ghader Mohammed-Zadeh, Mostafa Salimi, Hassan Taley, Iraj Mohammadi, Rashid AkhKandy, Mohammad Amin Agushy, Ahmad Pouladkhany, Seyed Samy Hosseini, Seyed Jamal Mohammadi, Aziz Mohammad-Zadeh, Habibollah Golpary. In addition, there are 5 others accused of affiliation with MKO and thereby sentenced to death; we have also had news of a Canadian citizen who has been detained by the Islamic regime and sentenced to death).
Nice place..

Crime levels?

Massive Human rights violations, ill-treatment and abuse of woman and children, religious censorship and curtailment on freedom of speech.

ja... I'd say there are massive crime levels. Depends how you define a crime? Crimes against humanity or petty theft.

South Africa did the same with its political enemies pre-1994.

To some extent, but many of those were convicted terrorists. For example, Zondo who was found guilty of murdering 5 innocent civilians, and wounding many more.

Biko is an example that supports your case, but he wasn't executed.

Not sure that is the case in Iran.

Don't make assumptions.

My point is that we have moved on from that type of action against 'enemies of the state'.

Except now the state does nothing while double this number of people are killed every single day by crimials :o

The sentences were carried out in Tehran's Evin prison, state television reported.
The condemned were said to have committed rape, murder with torture, armed robbery and the trafficking of hundreds of kilograms of narcotics, though some were also accused of drinking alcohol and possession of ammunition.

"These people had criminal records and were repeat offenders. Each time after serving a prison term, they were released only to return to drug trafficking gangs and to continue committing crimes," said Saeed Mortazavi, the chief prosecutor. "We are hoping Tehran will become the most unsafe place for drug dealers, thugs and trouble-makers and also violators of people's honour."
Amnesty International said that Iran executed 317 people last year - more than anywhere else except China. Some hangings were carried out in public.
Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death under the country's sharia law, which has been enforced since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
However, following an outcry over the large number of public hangings, public executions were banned except in exceptional cases earlier this year by Iran's chief of judiciary, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.
The hangings are likely to intensify international scrutiny of Iran, which already faces heavy pressure to curb its nuclear programme or face heavier economic sanctions.
